“It looks like this, so let's do it like this.” Today I would like to address a very important detail for musicians and DJs who are starting to set up a lighting system. If you follow this advice, you will not only increase the reliability of your installation, but also save money in the end. And because I'm PowerPaul, there are a lot of details and mentions in passing that make this a quality article.
"Wirkt so wie, also machen wir mal so." Heute möchte ich ein sehr wichtiges Detail ansprechen für Musiker und DJs, welche anfangen sich eine Lichtanlage aufzubauen. Microphone cables are not DMX cables!
You know, DMX. The protocol you use to control your spotlights. Those round plugs with 3 or 5 pins. DMX is one of the most common protocols and is not only used with professional equipment, but also with semi-professional devices or in the “consumer goods” category. If you buy spotlights, there is a very good chance that you will control them via DMX. But you will know all this...
As soon as you have your first spotlights, you will be tempted to use a microphone cable as a cable, provided your DMX socket is 3-pin. And that seems to work at first, as long as your cable runs are not too long and there are only a few devices.
But as soon as your cable runs get longer or the number of devices increases, the problems start. Floodlights do not react, react incorrectly or start to flicker. PAR spotlights flicker or do not react or freeze. Moving heads then tend to move jerkily, wildly or not at all. The reason for this is that you have installed the wrong cables.
Microphone cables and DMX cables may look the same at first glance, but they are not. I'll explain the differences and what you can look out for to choose the right cable.

Mikrofonkabel sind keine DMX-Kabel!
Du weißt schon, DMX. Das Protokoll, mit welchen Du deine Scheinwerfer ansteuerst. Diese runden Stecker mit 3 oder 5 Pins. DMX ist eines der gängigsten Protokolle und nicht nur bei professionellen Equipment verbaut, sondern insbesondere auch bei semi-professionellen Geräten oder in der Kategorie "Konsumenten-Ware". Wenn Du Dir Scheinwerfer kaufst, ist die Chance sehr hoch, das Du diese per DMX ansteuerst. Du wirst das aber alles wissen...
Sobald Du deine ersten Scheinwerfer hast, liegt die Versuchung nahe, ein Mikrofonkabel als Leitung zu verwenden, sofern deine DMX-Buchse 3-polig ist. Und das funktioniert auch scheinbar erstmal, sofern deine Kabelstrecken nicht zu lang sind und es auch nur wenige Geräte sind.
Aber sobald deine Kabelwege länger werden oder die Anzahl der Geräte steigt, beginnen die Probleme. Scheinwerfer reagieren nicht, falsch oder beginnen zu flackern. PAR Scheinwerfer flackern oder reagieren nicht oder frieren ein. Moving Heads bewegen sich dann gerne ruckelig, wild oder eben gar nicht. Der Grund liegt dann darin, das du falsche Kabel installiert hast.
Mikrofonkabel und DMX-Kabel sehen zwar auf den ersten Blick gleich aus, sind es aber nicht. Ich erkläre dir die Unterschiede und worauf du achten kannst, um das richtige Kabel zu wählen.

Why is impedance important?
Impedance is the most important difference between the two types of cable. For digital signals such as DMX, a constant impedance (120 Ohm) is required to avoid reflections and signal loss. Signal loss is clear: your control signal does not even reach the spotlight. Reflections are control signals that radiate back in the opposite direction and therefore produce control signals that are undefinable for spotlights, overlay other signals and can therefore lead to an undefinable signal salad, whereupon your spotlights no longer know “what should I do now?”.
Warum ist die Impedanz wichtig?
Impedanz ist der wichtigste Unterschied zwischen den beiden Kabelarten. Für digitale Signale wie bei DMX, ist eine konstante Impedanz (120 Ohm) nötig, um Reflexionen und Signalverluste zu vermeiden. Signalverluste klar: dein Steuersignal kommt erst gar nicht an beim Scheinwerfer. Reflexionen sind Steuersignale, die wieder in gegengesetzte Richtung zurückstrahlen und somit für Scheinwerfer undefinierbare Steuersignale produzieren, andere Signale überlagern und folglich zu einem undefinierbaren Signalsalat führen können, woraufhin deine Scheinwerfer nicht länger wissen "was soll ich jetzt tun?".

Was that it? Not quite... The termination is still missing
An important point, regardless of whether you use microphone cables because you can't get DMX cables or only use DMX cables, is the terminating resistor, also known as the termination.
The terminating resistor is a plug that is inserted at the end of the signal chain (i.e. in the out socket of the last device). This plug has a 120 Ohm resistor in it. This prevents signal reflections that can occur when the digital signal reaches the "end of the line" and is thrown back there - similar to an echo.
These connecting resistors are available from specialist dealers for little money or can be made yourself. Basically, it is just a 120 Ohm resistor that is soldered between DMX+ and DMX- (pins 2 and 3 on XLR).
War's das? Nicht ganz... die Terminierung fehlt noch
Ein wichtiger Punkt, egal ob man nun doch Mikrofonkabel verwendet, weil man keine DMX-Kabel bekommt, oder nur DMX-Kabel verwendet, ist der Abschlusswiderstand, auch Terminierung genannt.
Der Abschlusswiderstand ist ein Stecker, welcher am Ende der Signalkette (folglich in die Out-Buchse des letzten Geräts) eingesteckt wird. Dieser Stecker hat einen 120 Ohm Widerstand inne. Dieser verhindert Signalreflexionen, die entstehen können, wenn das digitale Signal ans "Ende der Leitung" trifft und dort zurückgeworfen wird – ähnlich wie ein Echo.
Diese Anschlusswiderstände sind für kleines Geld im Fachhandel erhältlich oder lassen sich auch selbst herstellen. Im Grunde ist es nur ein 120 Ohm Wiederstand, welcher zwischen DMX+ und DMX- (Pin 2 und 3 bei XLR) eingelötet wird.
Microphone cable & no termination = double risk
A terminating resistor is "mandatory", especially if you use microphone cables. Why? Because you already have a broken signal with a microphone cable. Broken signals mean incorrect execution of the control signals within the devices. If this "broken" signal is reflected back again at the end, the interference creates even worse signals, which are even more difficult to process correctly.
Mikrofonkabel & keine Terminierung = doppelt riskant
Insbesondere wenn Du Mikrofonkabel verwendest, wird ein Abschlusswiderstand zur "Pflicht". Warum? Weil du mit einem Mikrofonkabel eh schon ein kaputtes Signal hast. Kaputte Signale bedeuten inkorrekte Ausführung der Steuersignale innerhalb der Geräte. Wenn nun dieses "kaputte" Signal am Ende nochmals zurückreflektiert wird, dann entstehen durch die Interferenzen noch schlimmere Signale, welche noch weniger einwandfrei verarbeitet werden können.
DMX cables are often more expensive - but still save money
The reason is easy to explain. If you buy cheap, you buy twice. Of course you can save a few percent when buying if you use microphone cables. And in the beginning, if you only have 2, 3 or 4 spotlights, there is a certain probability that everything will work without major interference. But with a certain probability you will buy more and more spotlights and the signal chain will get longer and longer (musicians and event technicians are like that...).
As a result, the number of interfering signals also increases - until at some point you stand in front of your system and observe faulty behavior of your lights. At this point at the latest, if you have the education about it, you realize "damn, I need DMX cables...". Good. And what are you going to do with all the microphone cables you've bought so far? Hopefully you'll have a use for them.
DMX-Kabel sind oft teurer - sparen aber trotzdem Geld
Der Grund ist schnell erklärt. Wer billig kauft, kauft zweimal. Klar kannst du beim Kauf ein paar Prozent sparen, wenn Du Mikrofonleitungen verwendest. Und am Anfang, wenn Du nur 2, 3, 4 Scheinwerfer hast, funktioniert auch alles mit einer gewissen Wahrscheinlichkeit ohne große Störungen. Aber mit einer gewissen Wahrscheinlichkeit kauft Du Dir mehr und mehr Scheinwerfer und die Signalkette wird immer länger (Musiker und Veranstaltungstechniker sind halt so...).
Somit werden auch die gestörten Signale mehr und mehr - bis Du irgendwann vor deiner Anlage stehst und fehlerhaftes Verhalten deiner Lichter beobachtest. Spätestens jetzt merkst du, sofern du die Bildung darüber hast, "verdammt, ich brauche doch DMX-Kabel...". Gut. Und was machst Du jetzt mit all den ganzen Mikrofonkabeln, die du dir bis dahin gekauft hast? Hoffentlich hast du dann einen Verwendungszweck dafür.
What to do if you really can't get DMX cables?
If you come from a western system, sometimes you lack perspective on how it actually is in most parts of the world: Amazon and other retailers don't deliver everywhere, the tech store has no interest in stocking DMX cables because “nobody” buys them and you're an outsider with your professional needs. Or the already imported goods are sold by cut-throats. And the Chinese website may not be a solution either - due to customs duties, economic embargoes or remote delivery locations. So, despite all your efforts, you can't get DMX cables at reasonably acceptable prices. What then?
Use microphone cables that are as short as possible
The shorter the cable, the lower the effects of incorrect impedance. Long microphone cables = more reflection, more attenuation, more interference.
If possible, use high-quality microphone cables with good shielding
Cheap or poorly shielded cables are particularly susceptible to interference. Balanced, well-shielded XLR cables with thick inner conductors are better.
Protect cable routes from interference
Do not lay cables over or along power cables to avoid interference radiation. Do any other things radiate? Microphone transmitters and receivers? Keep your distance!
Do not use T-pieces or Y-cables
These increase reflections and complicate the signal chain. DMX is a bus, not a star network - every “branch” can cause interference.
Use termination
A terminating resistor (120 Ohm) at the end of the signal chain is almost mandatory. If you only use microphone cables, termination is more important than ever. It helps to at least dampen reflections.
Few devices per line - use splitters if necessary
More devices means more electrical load + more potential sources of error. Use a DMX splitter to divide device groups - this reduces the load per line.
Clean connections = avoid sources of error
Make sure the XLR connectors are correctly locked to avoid loose contacts.
If possible, set a slower refresh rate
Some DMX controllers allow the transmission speed/refresh rate to be reduced. A slower DMX rate (e.g. 25 Hz instead of 40/44 Hz) is more robust in case of poor cable quality.
Was tun, wenn man wirklich keine DMX-Kabel bekommt?
Wenn man aus westlichen System kommt, fehlt manchmal Perspektive, wie es in den meisten Teilen der Welt tatsächlich ist: Amazon und andere Händler liefern nicht überall, der Technikladen hat kein Interesse, sich DMX-Kabel ins Lager zu legen, weil sie "niemand" kauft und du mit deinem professionellem Bedarf ein Außenseiter bist. Oder die bereits importierte Ware wird von Halsabschneidern verkauft. Und eventuell ist auch die chinesische Website keine Lösung - gehörige Zölle, Wirtschaftsembargos oder abgelegene Zustellungsorte könnten Gründe sein. Du bekommst also trotz aller Bemühungen keine DMX-Kabel zu einigermaßen annehmbaren Preisen. Was dann?
Möglichst kurze Mikrofonkabel verwenden
Je kürzer das Kabel, desto geringer die Auswirkungen der falschen Impedanz. Lange Mikrofonkabel = mehr Reflexion, mehr Dämpfung, mehr Störungen.
Möglichst hochwertige Mikrofonkabel mit guter Abschirmung verwenden
Billige oder schlecht geschirmte Kabel sind besonders störanfällig. Besser sind symmetrische, gut geschirmte XLR-Kabel mit dicken Innenleitern.
Kabelwege vor Interferenzen schützen
Entsprechende Kabel nicht über oder entlang Stromkabeln legen, um Störstrahlung zu vermeiden. Irgendwelche andere Dinge strahlen? Mikrofonsender und -Empfänger? Bewahre Abstand!
Keine T-Stücke oder Y-Kabel verwenden
Diese erhöhen Reflexionen und verkomplizieren die Signalkette. DMX ist ein Bus, kein Sternnetzwerk – jeder „Abzweig“ kann stören.
Terminierung verwenden
Ein Abschlusswiderstand (120 Ohm) am Ende der Signalkette ist beinahe Pflicht. Wenn du nur Mikrofonkabel nutzt, ist Terminierung wichtiger denn je. Sie hilft, Reflexionen wenigstens zu dämpfen.
Wenig Geräte pro Linie – ggf. Splitter verwenden
Mehr Geräte sind mehr elektrische Last + mehr potenzielle Fehlerquellen. Verwende einen DMX-Splitter, um Gerätegruppen aufzuteilen – das senkt die Belastung je Linie.
Saubere Verbindungen = Fehlerquellen vermeiden
Achte auf korrekt verriegelte XLR-Stecker, um keine Wackelkontakte zu haben.
Wenn möglich, langsame Refresh-Rate einstellen
Manche DMX-Controller erlauben, die Sendegeschwindigkeit/Aktualisierungsrate zu reduzieren. Eine langsamere DMX-Rate (z. B. 25 Hz statt 40/44 Hz) ist robuster bei schlechter Kabelqualität.
Good to know: Refresh rate
DMX normally works with a fixed refresh rate of 40 or 44 Hz. 44 Hz means that a new control signal can be sent approximately every 22.7 milliseconds. As a guide, it is said that a 20 millisecond difference between a sound and light signal does not really matter to human perception; it is still perceived as synchronous. This is good to know if you cannot send too many control signals at the same time in your light programming and have to stagger them. However, if you reduce the refresh rate to 25 Hertz, a new signal is only sent every 40 milliseconds. At 10 Hertz, only every 100 milliseconds. And for the sake of clarity and because I like to write high-quality articles:
Gut zu wissen: Aktualisierungsrate
DMX arbeitet normalerweise mit einer festen Refresh-Rate von 40 oder 44 Hz. 44 Hertz bedeuten, dass rund alle 22,7 Millisekunden ein neues Steuersignal gesendet werden kann. Als Richtwert sagt man, das es der menschlichen Wahrnehmung nicht wirklich etwas ausmacht, wenn 20 Millisekunden Unterschied zwischen einem Ton- und Lichtsignal liegen; es wird noch immer als synchron wahrgenommen. Das ist gut zu wissen, falls Du in deiner Lichtprogrammierung nicht zu viele Steuersignale zu einem Zeitpunkt senden kannst und diese staffeln musst. Wenn du aber die Aktualisierungsrate auf 25 Hertz drosselst, wird nur alle 40 Millisekunden ein neues Signal gesendet. Bei 10 Hertz sogar nur alle 100 Millisekunden. Und der Übersicht wegen und weil ich es mag, hochwertige Artikel zu schreiben:

Yes, people “feel” a difference whether we perceive the light or the sound first. Why is that? Because in everyday life we are used to light being faster than sound: in a thunderstorm, we see the lightning before the thunder. At concerts at a great distance, for example, we hear the beat later than we see it. We therefore tolerate light before sound rather than sound before light.
But so that you don't have to memorize “light before sound” & “sound before light”, here is a simplified version:
< 20 ms difference = perfectly synchronized, barely noticeable.
20-40 ms difference = usually acceptable, especially with slow music or ambient light.
> 50 ms difference = noticeable, especially with beats or lights.
> 80-100 ms difference = disturbing, appears unclean, off beat.
Consider and include the acoustic delay. Acoustic propagation delay is very important for sound reinforcement in large/long rooms or open-air stages, and is also very relevant for the topic of “light & sound”.
Sound travels at 343 meters per second (at 20° Celsius - but don't worry about the temperature). Consequently:
Ja, der Mensch "fühlt" einen Unterschied, ob wir zuerst das Licht oder den Ton wahrnehmen. Warum? Weil wir im Alltag gewohnt sind, dass Licht schneller ist als Schall: Bei einem Gewitter sehen wir den Blitz vor dem Donner. Bei Konzerten in großer Entfernung hören wir z. B. den Schlag später als wir ihn sehen. Daher tolerieren wir Licht-vor-Ton eher als Ton-vor-Licht.
Aber damit Du dir nicht auch noch "Licht vor Ton" & "Ton vor Licht" merken musst, hier etwas vereinfacht:
< 20 ms Unterschied = perfekt synchron, kaum wahrnehmbar.
20–40 ms Unterschied = meist akzeptabel, besonders bei langsamen Musikstücken oder Ambient-Licht.
> 50 ms Unterschied = merkbar, besonders bei Schlaglichtern oder Beats.
> 80–100 ms Unterschied = störend, wirkt unsauber, neben dem Takt.
Bedenke und inkludiere die akustische Laufzeitverzögerung. Akustische Laufzeitverzögerung ist sehr wichtig bei der Beschallung großer/langer Räume oder Open-Air-Bühnen, und auch für das Thema "Licht & Ton" sehr relevant.
Schall bewegt sich mit 343 Metern pro Sekunde (bei 20° Celsius - vernachlässige die Temperatur aber ruhig). Folglich:

In fact, it's perfectly okay if you have a 20 millisecond delay until your spotlights react. Because the sound reaches the listener with a delay anyway and the technical delay and acoustic delay meet at the end at the height of the listener/viewer - and there the real distance between sound and light is completely different.
If you now know this, you can now also better judge whether you would rather move a switching signal for an acoustic element forward or push it back...
Now we've made a really wide turn, but it was important to me at this point to give you a complete picture. Let's continue with the core topic:
Faktisch ist es also vollkommen okay, wenn Du 20 Millisekunden Verzögerung hast, bis deine Scheinwerfer reagieren. Weil der Ton eh verzögert beim Zuhörer ankommt und technische Verzögerung und akustische Laufzeitverzögerung sich am Ende auf Höhe der Zuhörer/Betrachter treffen - und dort ist der reale Abstand zwischen Ton und Licht ein ganz anderer.
Wenn Du dies nun weißt, kannst Du nun auch besser beurteilen, ob du ein Schaltsignal für ein akustisches Element eher vorverlegen würdest oder Du es nach hinten schiebst...
Jetzt haben wir wirklich eine weite Kurve gemacht, die mir an dieser Stelle aber wichtig war, um Dir ein vollständiges Bild zu geben. Machen wir weiter mit dem Kern-Thema:
If your system currently consists of microphone cables, but you want to upgrade... which cables first?
This question is important. Because many people need this information when they realize “something is not right here”. Let's assume you can't completely replace the entire cable system for reasons of cost or availability. Which cables should be replaced first?
The longest cable sections first
Why? The longer the cable, the greater the effect of impedance differences, attenuation and reflections. A long microphone cable can massively distort the DMX signal, especially without termination.
The cables directly after the lighting console/processor/transmitter
Why? This is the point at which the digital signal is generated. If there is a bad cable right at the beginning, the signal is already sent out incorrectly. Logically, even high-quality devices cannot produce a good signal from a distorted one.
The cables to particularly sensitive devices
Some spotlights, especially older or cheaper models, have less robust DMX receivers. If these “drop out”, it can help to replace the supply line to these devices with DMX cables.
Try to integrate particularly sensitive devices into the cable path as early as possible and not at the end, when the DMX signal has already been damaged by countless meters of microphone cable.
The rest according to budget
Logical. And if you like your lighting installation, you'll be happy and proud to have finally perfected this aspect too.
And as long as you still have microphone cables included, what do you do? Right: microphone cable at the end of the signal chain, as short a cable as possible and a 120 Ohm resistor at the end.
Wenn dein System aktuell aus Mikrofonkabeln besteht, du aber umrüsten willst... welche Kabel zuerst?
Diese Frage ist wichtig. Denn viele brauchen diese Information wenn sie merken "irgendwas stimmt hier nicht". Gehen wir mal davon aus, du kannst aus Kosten- oder Verfügbarkeitsgründen nicht das komplette Kabelsystem komplett ersetzen. Welche Kabel sollte man zuerst ersetzen?
Die längsten Kabelstücke zuerst
Warum? Je länger das Kabel, desto stärker wirken sich Impedanzunterschiede, Dämpfung und Reflexionen aus. Ein langes Mikrofonkabel kann das DMX-Signal massiv verzerren, besonders ohne Terminierung.
Die Kabel direkt nach dem Lichtpult/Prozessor/Sender
Warum? Das ist der Punkt, an dem das digitale Signal erzeugt wird. Wenn gleich zu Beginn ein schlechtes Kabel kommt, wird das Signal schon fehlerhaft losgeschickt. Logisch: auch hochwertige Geräte können kein gutes Signal aus einem verzerrten machen.
Die Kabel zu besonders empfindlichen Geräten
Einige Scheinwerfer, vor allem ältere oder billigere Modelle, haben weniger robuste DMX-Empfänger. Wenn genau diese "aussteigen", kann es helfen, die Zuleitung zu diesen Geräten durch DMX-Kabel zu ersetzen.
Versuche besonders empfindliche Geräte möglichst früh in den Kabelweg einzubinden und nicht erst am Ende, wenn das DMX-Signal schon durch unzählige Meter Mikrofonkabel beschädigt wurde.
Den Rest nach Budget
Logisch. Und wenn Du deine Lichtinstallation geil findest, wist Du froh und stolz darauf sein, auch diesen Aspekt endlich perfektioniert zu haben.
Und solange Du noch Mikrofonkabel inkludiert hast, machst Du was? Richtig: Mikrofonkabel ans Ende der Signalkette, möglichst kurze Kabel und einen Widerstand von 120 Ohm ans Ende.
How do you recognize microphone or DMX cables?
Do you have a large collection of cables? Then better organize it! But even if all the cables are just lying around in a single cable box, no problem!
An indication, but not a reliable one
Some manufacturers and event technicians mark their DMX cables with purple or gray on the plug, but not all manufacturers do this. If you solder cables together yourself or commission them, you now know which color ring on the plug (or shrink tubing on the cable behind the plug) you should choose.
Labeling of the cable manufacturer on the cable by the manufacturer
This is the simplest and usually most practical method. On a DMX cable, you will find printed information such as “DMX 512”, “120 Ohm”, “Digital Cable” or “AES/EBU”. Microphone cables, on the other hand, are labeled “Mic Cable”, “Balanced Microphone Cable”, “Low Noise Audio Cable”. If a cable does not have a label, you can assume that it is not a DMX cable, but a cheap microphone cable.
Stiffness & feel
DMX cables usually feel stiffer and harder because they are designed for precise signal routing. Microphone cables are often softer and more flexible so that they can be laid easily on stages.
Internal construction (if open or visible)
If you see a cable on a cut end or a transparent plug:
DMX cables often have precisely twisted wires (twisted pair), a thin additional foil as shielding (next to the braid) and a label on the wires (e.g. “DATA +”, “DATA -”).
Microphone cables are also designed symmetrically, but without special measures for impedance control. The inner conductor is usually thicker. Good microphone cables have a dense copper braid or foil for shielding against interference, often of a higher quality than cheap DMX cables.
Measure using technical aids:
You could also find this out with an oscilloscope or impedance meter. A normal multimeter cannot do this. Even if you say “Yes, I can measure the resistance with it!”. Simply no. A multimeter only measures DC resistance, not high-frequency behavior. (Nevertheless, a multimeter is useful for musicians with electronics and event technicians to detect incorrect polarity, cable breaks or loose connections! )
If you have an oscilloscope or impedance meter in your workshop, then you can assess high-frequency behavior. But then you probably haven't clicked on this article. And for a normal musician, such a device is absolutely inappropriate, as the cost/benefit calculation does not fit for a normal musician.
Wie erkennst du Mikrofon- oder DMX-Kabel?
Dein Kabelsammelsurium ist groß? Dann ordne besser! Aber auch wenn alle Kabel nur in einer einzigen Kabelkiste rumliegen, kein Problem!
Ein Indiz, aber nicht zuverlässig
Manche Hersteller und Veranstaltungstechniker markieren ihre DMX-Kabel mit Lila oder Grau am Stecker. Das tun aber nicht alle Hersteller. Wenn du selbst Kabel zusammenlötest oder in Auftrag gibst, weißt du nun aber, welchen Farbring am Stecker (oder Schrumpfschlauch auf dem Kabel hinter dem Stecker) du wählen solltest.
Beschriftung des Kabelherstellers auf dem Kabel seitens des Herstellers
Das ist die einfachste und zumeist praktikabelste Methode. Auf einem DMX-Kabel findest Du aufgedruckte Hinweise wie "DMX 512", "120 Ohm", "Digital Cable" oder "AES/EBU". Auf Mikrofonkabeln dagegen Bezeichnungen wie "Mic Cable", "Balanced Microphone Cable", "Low Noise Audio Cable". Wenn ein Kabel keinen Aufdruck hat, kannst Du davon ausgehen, das es kein DMX-Kabel ist, sondern ein billiges Mikrofonkabel.
Steifigkeit & Haptik
DMX-Kabel fühlen sich meist steifer und härter an, weil sie auf präzise Signalführung ausgelegt sind. Mikrofonkabel sind oft weicher und flexibler, damit sie sich auf Bühnen gut verlegen lassen.
Innenaufbau (wenn offen oder sichtbar)
Wenn du ein Kabel an einem abgeschnittenen Ende oder einem durchsichtigen Stecker siehst:
DMX-Kabel haben oft exakt verdrillte Adern (Twisted Pair), eine dünne zusätzliche Folie als Schirmung (neben dem Geflecht) und eine Beschriftung auf den Adern (z. B. “DATA +”, “DATA –”).
Mikrofonkabel sind ebenfalls symmetrisch ausgelegt, aber ohne besondere Maßnahmen zur Impedanzkontrolle. Der Innenleiter ist meist dicker. Gute Mikrofonkabel verfügen über ein dichtes Kupfergeflecht oder Folie zur Schirmung gegen Störungen, oft sogar hochwertiger als bei billigen DMX-Kabeln.
Messen per technischer Hilfsmittel:
Mit einem Oszilloskop oder Impedanzmessgerät könntest Du dies ebenfalls herausfinden. Ein normales Multimeter kann dies nicht. Auch wenn Du sagst "Doch, ich kann den Widerstand damit messen!". Einfach nein. Ein Multimeter misst nur Gleichstromwiderstand, nicht Hochfrequenzverhalten. (Trotzdem ist ein Multimeter für Musiker mit Elektronik und Eventtechniker nützlich, um falsche Polung, Kabelbrüche oder Wackelkontakt zu detektieren! )
Wenn Du ein Oszilloskop oder Impedanzmessgerät in deiner Werkstatt hast, dann kannst Du Hochfrequenzverhalten beurteilen. Aber dann hast Du wahrscheinlich auch den Artikel hier nicht angeklickt. Und für einen normalen Musiker ist ein solches Gerät absolut unangemessen, da die Kosten/Nutzen-Rechnung für einen normalen Musiker nicht passt.
