Hi everyone! Time for another explainer for Splinterlands, because it's a great game but with a steep learning curve, but then again... most good games have the same.
In the splinterlands collaboration with the Wasder app, we made a new guild to support and guide new players, and I started writing explainers to refer to, because it's just too much to simply tell people in our discord server.
Are you a new player who wants a nice team to work with and get some advice and support where needed? Feel free to join our Discord server.
In my explainer series I made some posts before:
Getting started in Splinterlands.
Battle basics, rulesets and card placement.
Last weeks, I made the first posts in my 'The obvious, not so obvious series'
You can find part 1 here.
You can find part 2 here.
You can find part 3 here.
You can find part 4 here.

For us Splinter junkies some things are so obvious, while they are not at all for players starting and learning the ropes, so I want to talk about some basics and strategies I'm using in different rulesets to help you guys get some guidance because there's just too much to remember. In my country we have a saying, literally translated it goes: you can no longer see the wood because of the trees 😅
In my own gameplay doing ranked battles, brawls and sometimes a tournament I'll try and write down tips I can talk about here, I'll try to make 2 or 3 tips in every edition, depending on how long my post is because no one wants to read for 15 minutes right?
Did you know???
- The Piercing ability also applies to Blast damage.
- Tournament fee gets determined by what season chests you get, so if you got to Gold last season and now are playing is Silver, and you want to play tournaments, you pay a lot more fee than players who stayed in Silver! (thanks to my guildy @estebam for mentioning this, we both did't knew either)
- When you're nearing the End of Season, it's better to start using all your energy if you have the time to play that much, I'll try to end the season with as close to 0 energy as I can, so I can skip playing the first day of the new season, and preferably a bit longer than that.
This way I can use the first day to reset my claim timer and let the bigger players claw their way up on the ranking ladder without kicking my ass 😆
#1: Nice trick for Super Sneak ruleset.
With the Super Sneak ruleset, all melee monsters get the sneak ability and especially lower level or starting players will focus on protecting their backline against enemy sneaks.
try out this set-up, or a version of it, depending on your cards and available mana in your battle.

Watch the battle for yourself here.
It's even better when you can play Unicorn Mustang as your first card, protecting against enemy magic damage.
The idea is that the opponent is going to kill the martyr card in the back first, boosting the camouflaged Djinn Biljka and Regal Peryton, Peryton is going to 7 speed with flying making is very hard to hit, and when it DOES get hit, spirit hoarder will heal it.
I made this strategy myself and it has a very high win rate, and so funny to see so many misses! just don't tell everyone 😉.
#2: Strategy you can use for Blast battles.
This is an example how to play a blast battle... control enemy fire with taunt, stop blast with reflection shield, try to hit enemy in the middle for maximum damage, you can do this with every splinter as long as you have a taunt monster.
In general, with blast or opportunity battles you'll want to hit first so speed is important, the water splinter is better for this but it wasn't available for this battle.
You can watch the battle yourself here.

#3: Joining a Guild is important!
When you're playing Splinterlands and you're not in a guild, you're missing out! In a guild you can:
- Earn slightly more SPS with every battle won.
- Join Brawls, earning more SPS and Merits you can use to buy Gladiator cards.
- Get help or advice from more experienced guild members, as well as card or SPS delegations.
My guild has room for players in the second Legion:
Non Fungible Gaming - Legion 2 is looking for members! Free to join, free to play! New and Experienced players are welcome 🙂
only requirement is you join our discord server so I can tag you if you forget to sumbit brawl battles, you don't have to talk.
Hall lvl1
Arena lvl 1
Barracks lvl 1
Store lvl 1
#4: Join Tournaments to hone your skills and earn more SPS.
Tournaments are not only for whales, there are numerous beginner tournaments out there, look for 'anytime' tournaments, so you don't have to play at a certain time but can just submit your battles like in a brawl, within 24 hours mostly.
For lower level players most tournaments will only cost you 2-5 SPS and even if you do terrible, you at least get your entry fee back.
One of these tournaments was 5 SPS entry fee, the rest all 2 SPS, I got more SPS out in every single one.

You can see what tournaments are starting in the next days on this page.
Just take a good look at the card requirements! same as with brawls, don't join Gold Foil or Alpha only tournaments when you don't have the cards.
I recommend starting with one of these:

The same named tournaments are held every few days.
Well, that's it for this week! I hope you learned a thing or two when you made it this far, and I'll hope to see you next week!

Thank you for reading!!!
If you haven't made an account already, please consider using my referral link to sign up, I'll happily send the amount I get for your signup back to you in DEC or SPS to help you start.
Have a great day!
