🗞 Market Wrap: Bitcoin Steady Near $54K; RSI Indicator Warns of Limited Uptrend

Bitcoin (BTC) trading around $53,824.22 as of 20:00 UTC (4 p.m. ET). Climbing 3.22% over the previous 24 hours.

Bitcoin’s 24-hour range: $51,267.19-$54,032.05 (CoinDesk 20)

BTC trades above its 10-hour and 50-hour averages on the hourly chart, a bullish signal for market technicians.

What a dud: Friday’s record $6 billion expiry in the bitcoin options market turned to be a nonevent as prices for the largest cryptocurrency climbed steadily, with nary a glimpse of the feared plunge to the “max pain” point of $44,000.

Such upward momentum could be limited. A widely tracked technical indicator, the monthly relative strength index (RSI), is signaling bitcoin is near an extreme overbought level.

Ether up, market debates Uniswap’s latest update

Uniswap, the leading decentralized exchange (DEX) on Ethereum, announced another upgrade that will be launched on May 5. Uniswap v3, according to the firm behind the platform, will introduce a key change called “concentrated liquidity.”

While the new feature should give liquidity providers (LPs) more control over the price ranges in which they provide capital, there has been criticism that the changes might make it easier for retail liquidity providers to lose money, due to lack of experience.

The Weeknd teased a “new song living in NFT space” on Twitter.

Fresh from his Super Bowl performance, greatest hits album, and House of Balloons reissue, The Weeknd is teasing an entry into the world of NFTs.

On Twitter, the singer wrote that a “new song living in NFT space” was coming soon (whether he’s talking about an original song or some other form of NFT is unclear, and we’ve reached out for comment).

Whatever he means, Abel Tesfaye is far from the first musician to experiment with non-fungible tokens—the blockchain-based collectibles that have quickly become crypto’s splashiest investment craze.

An NFT is a specialized token that can be associated with a file (say, a GIF or an MP3) and auctioned off. The idea is that you’re buying a form of transparent proof-of-ownership, which can be worth much more than the file itself.

🗞 Bitcoin Firms Team Up to Launch ‘Clean Energy’ Mining Venture

Two companies, DMG Blockchain Solutions and Argo Blockchain, today said they will launch a Bitcoin mining pool that uses green energy.

The pool will be powered by hydroelectric resources, according to the firms.

Two companies today announced a clean energy Bitcoin mining pool—which they claim will be a world first—as the debate on the crypto’s carbon footprint heats up.

Blockchain solution company, DMG Blockchain Solutions, and Bitcoin mining firm, Argo Blockchain, said their project will produce clean Bitcoin using hydroelectric resources.

The plan, according to the two companies, is that the mining pool, named Terra Pool, “will work to better manage the impact of Bitcoin mining on the climate.”

While London-based Argo is the only mining company listed on the London Stock Exchange. The publicly traded company, founded in 2017, last month achieved record revenue growth.

🗞 Duke University’s Early Coinbase Investment Could Now Be Worth $500M

The endowment fund of Duke University, the alma mater of Coinbase co-founder Fred Ehrsam, was one of the fortunate few to have made an early investment in the soon-to-list cryptocurrency exchange, CoinDesk has learned.

Two people familiar with the matter said the $3.9 billion Duke Endowment was included early on in the cap table of Coinbase, which is expected to command a price tag of around $100 billion when its shares debut on Nasdaq. Those shares are now worth a small fortune, on the order of nine figures, the sources said.

“The Duke University endowment has direct Coinbase exposure because Fred [Ehrsam] approached Duke for one of the early rounds,” said a source who was part of the venture capital community at that time. “They probably 100x’d their money, after dilution. So even if they only put in $5 million, they just made $500 million, which is a lot for an endowment.”

In 2015, Coinbase raised $75 million as part of a Series C funding round backed by the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), USAA, Spanish bank BBVA and Japanese telco DoCoMo. The exchange’s 2017 Series D round raised $100 million from Institutional Venture Partners (IVP), Battery Ventures, Draper Associates, Greylock Partners, Section 32 and Spark Capital.
