When I get the taking sides rule, my main though always instantly goes out to how I can get Armor on my monsters. Each splinter class cards have their own strenght but the one I never end up choosing is Fire because that is the hardest one to get armor on your monsters. Aside from this, I mainly look at what some on the most powerfull & fun class cards are th build a deck around. These usually are the Ruler of The Seas, The Queen Mycelia, The Sacred Unicorn, the Ravenwood Warde, or the Vruz.
A lot however depends on the other game rules that are on. For the battle this week these were Odds Out & Eathquake for which the Earth Splinter class cards seemed to be the best choice since it has multiple good odds mana cost monsters with the Fly Ability.
With only 14 Mana to spent there were limited options and the 2 cards I wanted to get in were the Pelacor Mercenary and the Screeching Vulture which left just 1 mana to be used and I choose the Mycelic Morphoid putting it in 1st place knowing it might do some thorns damage and absorb some damage as it was not going to survive the earthquake damage.
My opponent had a very similar idea also playing the Pelacor Mercenary but instead opting to combine it with a martyr ability monster to get its stats up. My strategy ended up to be a bit better which got me the win on this one. I always like these battles where both players have similar ideas executed with a slight variation.
