What games you played during the weekend and what movies you've seen lately? π
Perhaps my introduction sounds a little bit awkward since it's a gaming post, but the truth is that today's pick for my Personal Review Series is both a film and a game.
... or maybe just a game with cool cinematics? Or maybe just a movie?
Hmmm, I don't know! Perhaps you can let me know what you think of this one in the comments down below because I would call Late Shift an interactive movie but having the experience of the telltale games where you basically do the same thing I also think about it as a game. π
Anyway, enough with the ramblings and let's better get to what this movie-game with an interesting name is about because most likely some of you will find themselves in the story. And I'm only talking about the part with being a student but also having a job at the same time.
So, to start with the beginning, there is this smart student called Matt who splits his time between studies and being in a Late Shift at night while he's at work. What at first seems like a pretty boring job with not too many things to be done, he faces his first challenge when he has to make a decision whether he's in for an illegal thing to earn some extra money or not.
However, the thinking time doesn't last for too long because another challenge occurs when he notices on the surveillance cameras something suspect which is also the first important moment when you will have to pick if you want to go and check out what's going on or act like everything is normal.
I will try to avoid giving too many details as I don't want to turn this post into one full of spoilers, so I'll only focus on the details that are also shared on the internet to keep this on a safe line, lol.
So, while you'll notice that Matt is a very smart and innocent guy, he will wake up in the middle of a bold heist at one of the most famous London auction houses where he's forced to make a team with the bad guys in order to stay alive, but as every decision comes with consequences, do expect to see the story taking a lot of new twists and seeing everything become more and more complicated along the way.
Even though Matt was already ready for a long night at the work, the whole story will turn out as one of those nights full of events and things that maybe some people don't face in their entire life, but the big challenge is to stay true and think smart every next step you make so you don't complicate the things a lot more than they are because you'll notice that it's not a boring heist where someone steals something from a different person and that's it. π€
The game was written and directed by the Swiss director Tobias Weber (the author of Sherlock Holmes (2009 film)), who won the BAFTA Cymru award for Late Shift which is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, macOS, Classic Mac OS, tvOS and Mac OS, so there are plenty of platforms where you can try this out and make yourself responsible for what Matt is going through in that night, lol.
If this is not already obvious, the game is part of the crime and thriller categories that comes with a total of 180 decisions you can take in the 7 endings you can experience. A more genuine experience is replaying it a few times to discover everything in it and experience more endings and situations that won't be shown in every walkthrough.
Conclusions π€
I am a huge fan of point & click games and interactive movies and that makes me be very critical when it comes to spending time in this kind of movies/games, but Late Shift exceeded all my expectations with completely different consequences than I would have expected which is a great way to stay away from getting bored or losing your interest.
I'm happy that the game comes with 7 different endings because this kind of production doesn't have so many usually, so it's a great chance to replay it a few times to discover everything.
As many good thoughts I have about Late Shift there is also one single thing I didn't like, which is the impossibility to skip some sequences when you are replaying the game. You'll notice that some of these are replayed on all the 7 stories which is time consuming to see them again when you already know that part of the story. I wished there was some sort of skip button for that.
Did you try it? π
I know that Hive community comes with many game and film fans so I can't wait to hear from you guys if you already tried this one out or if it stir your curiosity even for just a little to play it in the near future! Let me know! β€οΈ
