As a music lover, I don’t allow myself to be attached to a single genre of music. My preference is metal, and not just any metal. I am a lover of strong, fast and melodic metal. These characteristics represent a number of genres and bands that are mainly concentrated in Europe. My favourite sub-genres are symphonic and power. Occasionally, this extends to folk and, on more limited occasions, progressive.
Each of these sub-genres are extremely difficult to perform. To compose and perform their songs requires a great deal of technical knowledge and skill. Surely, these genres are home to some of the greatest musical talent in the world, and I must admit that this is a factor that attracts me to them.
When it comes about any art, I like to follow the greats. I find myself following the careers of many artists not just because of what they do, but because of how well they do it. In music, it can seem effortless to identify the best; but in composing, there are so many factors that it can sometimes take a very tolerant approach.
That’s why opening my mind, and starting to explore far beyond my most prominent tastes, has changed my perception of what an exceptional musician is. It has led me to accept that outside of what I like most, there can be much better works than those that the “virtuous” musicians I usually follow have created.
Have you ever wondered what is the best musical album you have ever heard? Let’s not talk about one song because the more we narrow down the work, the more subjective the answer is. But seriously, have you ever wondered which one is? Because I asked myself that question several times, and I thought I needed to give some objective parameter to my criteria. That’s why I consider these four factors:
It has to be an album without major influences from the producers. It has to be very much the performers’ own work.
It must have an innovative concept that is difficult to imitate.
It must be sonically varied, but it must also maintain a particular essence in each song making it work very well when listened to in its entirety.
It must have a good implementation of technical knowledge, even if that does not represent difficulty of interpretation.
Because of these criteria, I could make quite a long list, but I didn’t need to. The answer was always clear to me. And the album that would crown it was not exactly metal. I am totally convinced that Trench by TØP (Twenty Øne Pilots) is the best album I’ve ever heard.
This work was released commercially in 2018, and I’ve been a lover of the album ever since, but not entirely. As I confessed in my post A new point of view, my love for Trench grew over time.
I was able to appreciate the magic present in Trench by listening to it often. This album not only meet all the criteria I mentioned, it also achieves many important things for me to value it as I do. One is that it doesn’t saturate you, no matter how many times you repeat it. It is an experience worth repeating again and again.
What Trench delivers during over 56 minutes and through 14 tracks is extraordinary, but even if it is not part of the fundamental elements for me to award the crown to Trench, what is built around it must also be considered. Trench is a concept album that is part of a saga.
The prequel to Trench is Blurryface, which until now remains the most successful album ever created by an indie band. The success of Blurryface was so huge that it did not surpass once, but twice, the billion views barrier in its music videos. And to top it all off, the album won them a Grammy.
The important and anecdotal part of it is that after having achieved everything that any musical artist would want commercially, the guys from TØP wanted to do something unheard of: they gambled on not being so successful anymore. And although it seems absurd, and I state it as a conjecture, I have solid grounds to believe so.
Blurryface was conceived without ambitiously pursuing commercial success in the first place. TØP’s entire discography is characterised by an attempt to be more art than product. They clearly weren’t sad to become multi-millionaires in the process, but when you’re at the top, you can feel anxious to stay there. That leads many artists to lose the personal side of their art and instead create simple products that they can sell.
What TØP did with Trench was completely the opposite. This production, led by vocalist Tyler Joseph and producer/collaborator Paul Bethany, is unabashedly daring musically, but commercially it was a gamble that achieved only modest success.
One factor for that outcome is that the album’s promotion was done loosely, but they managed to create a unique narrative in the process. They were dedicated to hinting at the history of Trench and Blurryface in order for the most interested fans to discover the context.
Trench’s story is interactive. They blended his backstory with reality making complex puzzles involving social media, websites and the lyrics of his songs. The album transcends much of the music it contains. That’s why the extra effort that all that construction represents is important when evaluating it. But equally, its themes are more relevant.
Remember when I said that Trench was not a metal album? Well, that’s not entirely true. The first song on the album, Jumpsuit, is considered hard rock and is heavy enough to say that it crosses the border into metal. The song is closer to the work of Bring Me The Horizon than what you would expect from a band like TØP.
Then comes one of my favourite songs on the album: Morph. From that point on, it starts to become clear that Trench can’t be locked into any genre. And this track in particular is so distinctive that on its own it can’t be defined in a specific genre. It moves from rap to a very danceable falsetto chorus whose instrumentation can be described as “weird”.
Perhaps My Blood sounds a bit “common”, but it is still particular that the disco genre is reached in the fourth song. This is followed by the best song for the majority (at least in commercial statistics). On Chlorine, the psychedelic sound that permeates the whole album is very present here, but it doesn’t really come through. And the construction of almost the entire track is upbeat, which makes it work very well as a single.
Then Smithereens jumps in to play. One of TØP’s few romantic songs, and a personal dedication from Tyler. This is followed by a sad ballad to those who have gone before, Neon Gravestones, and this leads into the poppiest yet most indie sounding song on the album, The Hype.
Next up is my favourite song on the album. Nico and the Niners have the lyrics that add the most to the album’s narrative. It starts with a phrase that is supposed to reveal important facts to understand: “east is up”. A shout that captures your attention to envelop you in psychedelia, rap, reggae, electronic music and rock.
The complexity of the composition is exceptional in this song. Not only because of the number of genres that converge there, but also because it is made to be played in reverse. I mean… WHAT!? After listening to it a couple of times, you notice that there are parts where phrases are spoken backwards, but that doesn’t explain how the instrumental sounds almost the same for most of the song. That has to be considered masterful, to say the least.
Following this beastly composition comes a track where the reggae genre is the protagonist, but it doesn’t sound like it. Cut My Lip could be the most psychedelic track on this psychotropic album. The distortion-laden bass that had opened the album stands out above all, but it takes steps back to almost be replaced by some synthetic winds in the middle of the song.
Cut My Lip is a track where every important element seems to take its turn to stand out. That leaves it with an unobtrusive body until it reaches its explosive end. But the next track goes back to keeping it simple at the opening. Bandito is a clear example that sometimes less is more, especially in the breakdown that leads to a falsetto that precedes another explosive electronic-sounding dénouement.
Then comes the turn of my favourite chorus of the album. Pet Cheetah is a composition that I won’t even attempt to describe. I don’t know an adequate adjective to express how special it is. I think it is the song that best represents the unique essence of this album.
Breaking away from that string of songs that would make you test positive in a drug test, we arrive at a slightly more earthy terrain. Legend is an upbeat track with a beat that can be danceable, and thus avoids arriving at Leave the City, the album’s closer, in a low mood.
The ending of Trench for some reason seems perfect to me. Tyler’s voice is almost whispery, and gives a sense of closure to what has been a journey that still has no concrete end, but so far, so good.
Having described all that this album has to offer, needless to say, I can’t find fault with it. Trench is a group of artists who strived to create an unparalleled piece of music that will delight the listener, but with an extra effort in all that the album can represent beyond their music.
Rarely do you see such a level of commitment in the music scene. For that and all the reasons already mentioned, I consider Trench the best album I have ever heard. Como melómano, no me permito cerrarme en un único género musical. Mi preferencia es el metal, y no cualquier tipo de metal. Yo soy amante de un metal pesado, rápido y melódico. Estas características representan una serie de géneros y bandas que se concentran principalmente en Europa. Mis sub-géneros favoritos son el symphonic y el power. A veces esto se extiende al folk y, en ocasiones más limitadas, al progressive.
Cada uno de estos sub-géneros son de una altísima dificultad de interpretación. Para componer y ejecutar sus canciones hacen falta altos conocimientos técnicos y buena habilidad. Seguramente estos géneros aglomeran algunos de los mayores talentos musicales del mundo, y debo reconocer que eso es un factor que me atrae mucho de estos.
En lo que respecta a todas las formas de arte, a mí me gusta seguir a los grandes. Me veo siguiendo la carrera de muchos artistas no solo por lo que hacen, sino por lo bien que lo hacen. En la música puede parecer muy sencillo identificar a los mejores; pero al componer hay tantos factores diferentes, que puede que a veces haga falta un criterio muy tolerante.
Por esa razón abrir mi mente, y empezar explorar mucho más allá de mis gustos más destacados, ha cambiado mi percepción de lo que es un músico excepcional. Eso me llevó a aceptar que fuera de mis gustos personales pueden haber obras mucho mejores que aquellas que los músicos “virtuosos” que sigo han creado.
¿Alguna vez te has preguntado cuál es el mejor álbum musical que hayas escuchado? No hablemos de una canción, porque cuanto más reduzcamos la obra más subjetiva es la respuesta. Pero en serio, ¿te has preguntado cuál es? Porque yo me hice esa pregunta varias veces, y pensé que necesitaba darle algún parámetro objetivo a mi criterio. Por eso tomo en cuenta estos cuatro factores:
Debe ser un álbum sin mayores influencias de los productores. Que sean obras muy propias de sus intérpretes.
Debe tener un concepto innovador y difícil de imitar.
Debe ser sonoramente variado, pero también debe mantener una esencia particular en cada canción haciéndolo funcionar muy bien al escucharlo por completo.
Debe tener una buena implementación de conocimientos técnicos, incluso si eso no representa dificultad de interpretación.
En base a estos criterios podía hacer una lista bastante larga, pero no hizo falta. La respuesta siempre la tuve clara. Y el álbum que coronaría no era precisamente de metal. Yo estoy totalmente convencido de que Trench, de TØP (Twenty Øne Pilots), es el mejor álbum que he escuchado.
Esta obra fue lanzada comercialmente en el año 2018, y desde entonces he sido un amante del álbum, pero no por completo. Como confesé en mi post Una nueva perspectiva, mi amor por Trench fue creciendo con el tiempo.
Pude valorar la magia presente en Trench por escucharlo con frecuencia. Esta obra no solo cumple con todos los criterios que mencioné, también logra muchas cosas importantes para que lo valore como lo hago. Una es que no llega saturarte por más que lo repitas. Es una experiencia que vale la pena repetir una y otra vez.
Lo que presenta Trench a lo largo de 56 minutos y 14 temas es extraordinario, pero aunque no sea parte de los elementos fundamentales para que le otorgue la corona a Trench, lo que está construido a su alrededor también debe ser considerado. Y es que Trench es un álbum conceptual que forma parte de una saga.
La precuela de Trench es Blurryface, lo que al día de hoy sigue siendo el álbum más exitoso que haya creado una banda indie. El éxito de Blurryface fue tan descomunal que superó no una, sino dos veces, la barrera del billon de visitas en sus vídeos musicales. Y para cereza del pastel, con ese trabajo ganaron un Grammy.
Lo importante y anecdótico de ello es que luego de haber logrado todo lo que cualquier artista musical quisiera comercialmente, los chicos de TØP quisieron hacer algo inaudito: apostaron por dejar de ser tan exitosos. Y aunque parezca absurdo y lo afirmo como una conjetura, tengo bases sólidas para creerlo así.
Blurryface había sido concebido sin perseguir ambiciosamente el éxito comercial en primer lugar. Toda la discografía de TØP se caracteriza porque intenta ser más arte que producto. Claramente no se sintieron tristes al hacerse multimillonarios en el proceso, pero cuando estás en la cima puedes sentirte ansioso por mantenerte allí. Eso lleva a muchos artistas a perder lo personal de su arte y crear, en cambio, simples productos que puedan vender.
Lo que hizo TØP con Trench fue diametralmente opuesto. Esta producción, liderada por el vocalista Tyler Joseph y el productor/colaborador Paul Bethany, es descaradamente atrevida musicalmente, pero comercialmente fue una apuesta que apenas logró un éxito modesto.
Un factor para ese resultado es que la promoción del álbum fue realizada de forma poco clara, pero lograron crear una narrativa única en el proceso. Se dedicaron a dar pistas sobre la historia de Trench y Blurryface con el objetivo de que los fanáticos más interesados descubrieran el contexto.
La historia de Trench es interactiva. Mezclaron su trasfondo con la realidad con acertijos complejos que incluían redes sociales, páginas web y las letras de sus canciones. El álbum trasciende mucho de la música que contiene. Por eso el esfuerzo extra que representa toda esa construcción es importante al evaluarlo. Pero igualmente sus temas son más relevantes.
¿Recuerdan que dije que Trench no era un álbum de metal? Bueno, eso no es del todo cierto. La primera canción del álbum, Jumpsuit, es considerada hard rock y es lo suficientemente pesada como para decir que cruza la frontera hasta el metal. La canción es más cercana a un trabajo de Bring Me The Horizon que a lo que esperarías de una banda como TØP.
Hago la acotación: nunca sabes qué esperar de TØP, pero en ese entonces eso no estaba tan claro como ahora. Por eso escuchar Trench por primera vez se sentía como una sorpresa canción a canción. Todo era tan innovador que rompía cualquier posible expectativa.
Trench está tan bien cuidado que te lleva de una descarga de ira headbanger y gutural a puro rap en la siguiente canción. Esto en la teoría puede parecer poco consistente, pero no se siente así. Para empezar la transición está hecha con esa intención, siendo que las notas finales de Jumpsuit y las primeras de Levitate están hechas de la misma forma. No te das cuenta de que has cambiado de canción hasta que Tyler empieza a cantar.
Luego viene una de mis canciones favoritas del álbum: Morph. A partir de ese punto empieza a notarse que Trench no puede ser encerrado en ningún género. Y este tema en especial es tan distintivo que por sí mismo no puede definirse en un género específico. Pasa del rap a un coro en falsetto muy bailable cuya instrumentalización puede describirse como “rara”.
My Blood tal vez es más “común” sonoramente, pero no deja de ser particular que se haya llegado al género disco en la cuarta canción. Esta es seguida por la canción favorita de la mayoría (al menos en estadísticas comerciales). En Chlorine el sonido psicodélico que impregna todo el álbum está muy presente aquí, pero no se llega a notar demasiado. Y la construcción de casi todo el tema es alegre, lo que lo hace funcionar muy bien como sencillo.
Luego salta a reproducirse Smithereens. Una de las pocas canciones románticas de TØP, y una dedicatoria personal de Tyler. Esta es seguida por una triste balada a quienes ya se han ido, Neon Gravestones, y esta desemboca en la canción que suena más pop y a la vez más indie de todo el álbum: The Hype.
Seguidamente se asoma mi canción favorita de todo el álbum. Nico and the Niners tiene la letra que más aporta a la narrativa del álbum. Inicia con una frase que se supone que con revela datos importantes para entenderla: “east is up”. Un grito que captura la atención para envolverte en psicodelia, rap, reggae, música electrónica y rock.
La complejidad de la composición es excepcional en esa canción. No solo por la cantidad de géneros que allí convergen, sino porque también está hecha para ser reproducida a la inversa. I mean… WHAT!? Luego de escucharla un par de veces llegas a notar que hay partes donde se dicen frases al revés, pero eso no explica como la instrumental suena casi exactamente igual en la mayor parte del tema. Eso hay que que dimensionarlo cuando menos como magistral.
Seguido de esa bestialidad de composición viene un tema donde el género reggae es protagonista, pero no suena como tal. Cut My Lip es tal vez el tema más psicodélico de todo este psicotrópico en forma de álbum. Destaca sobre todo ese bajo cargado de distorsión que había abierto el álbum, pero va dando pasos atrás para casi ser reemplazado por unos vientos sintéticos a mitad de la canción.
Cut My Lip es un tema donde cada elemento importante parece tomar su turno para destacar. Eso lo deja con un cuerpo discreto hasta llegar a su final explosivo. Pero el tema siguiente vuele a apostar por lo sencillo en la apertura. Bandito es un ejemplo claro de que a veces menos es más, en especial en el breakdown que lleva a un falsetto que precede un nuevo desenlace explosivo con sonido electrónico.
Luego viene el turno de mi estribillo favorito del álbum. Pet Cheetah es una composición que ni siquiera intentaré describir. No conozco un adjetivo adecuado para expresar lo especial que es. Creo que es la canción que mejor representa la esencia única de este álbum.
Rompiendo con esas seguidilla de canciones que te harían dar positivo en un examen toxicológico, arribamos a un terreno un poco más terrenal. Legend es un tema alegre con un ritmo que puede ser bailable, y evita por ello llegar a Leave the City, el cierre del álbum, con un bajo ánimo.
El final de Trench por alguna razón me parece perfecto. La voz de Tyler es casi susurrante, y da la sensación de cerrar lo que ha sido una travesía que todavía no tiene un final concreto, pero por ahora todo está bien.
Ya habiendo descrito todo lo que este álbum ofrece, sobra decir que no logro encontrarle una falla. Trench es la apuesta de un grupo de artistas que se esforzaron por crear una pieza inigualable que resulte en deleite para quien lo escuche, pero con un esfuerzo extra en todo lo que el álbum pueda representar más allá de lo musical.
Pocas veces se ve tal nivel de compromiso en la escena musical. Por esa y todas las razones ya nombradas, considero a Trench el mejor álbum que haya escuchado.
