#8 - The Chassis: Our Great Challenge [ENG-ESP]

Greetings dear colleagues of Hive, welcome to my post once again, this time I was working with the Solidworks program to continue advancing with the modeling of the Tecno IV project for this I had to sit several hours during the week and have constant communication with my colleagues to take into account measures and consult doubts that were arising. As you can see in the image the briefcase is getting an interesting and compact shape, but the question we all have is with what material are we going to make it?

Saludos queridos compañeros de Hive, bienvenidos a mi post una vez más, en esta ocasión estuve trabajando con el programa Solidworks para seguir avanzando con el modelado del proyecto de Tecno IV para esto toco sentarme varias horas en la semana y tener una comunicación constante con mis compañeros para tener en cuenta medidas y consultar dudas que iban surgiendo. Como verán en la imagen el maletín esta quedando con una forma interesante y compacta, pero la duda que tenemos todos es ¿Con que material vamos a realizarlo?

The first thing that came to our mind was to make it with sheet metal, but based on this several doubts and inconveniences arose. What type of sheet metal? What thickness? Is it going to be folded sheet metal? How much would our final product weigh if it were made of sheet metal? Would it be folded sheet metal? How do we avoid sharp edges? These were some of the first inconveniences when thinking about choosing this material, so there was no other option but to get down to work and investigate.

Lo primero que se nos vino a la cabeza fue realizarlo con chapa, pero en base a esto surgen varias dudas e inconvenientes ¿Qué tipo de chapa? ¿Qué espesor? ¿Va a ser chapa plegada? ¿Cuánto pesaría nuestro producto final si fuera de chapa? ¿Sería chapa plegada? ¿Cómo evitamos los bordes filosos? Estas fueron algunos de los primeros inconvenientes a la hora de pensar en elegir este material, así que no quedo otra opción que poner manos a la obra e investigar.

We searched among the possibilities of sheets for products, I clarify that for this project we can propose a material for the final product (the one that is marketed) but for the prototype choose a more economical one. We found aluminum sheets, iron sheets, stainless steel sheets and galvanized sheet, choosing an aluminum sheet would make the product lightweight but aluminum is extremely expensive and the costs would go through the roof, similarly this would happen with stainless steel, which would offer greater protection in the sense of cleaning the paints but it was not really worth it. On the other hand, there was the galvanized sheet, which is difficult to weld and more accessible and the iron ones that in comparison with the others are economical, so for now we are looking at these last two options as possibilities, but we need to get samples of material to better understand how they would behave, if they would need folds to improve their stability as they are such large sheets or any other complications that may arise.

Buscamos entre las posibilidades de chapas para productos, aclaro que para este proyecto podemos proponer un material para el producto final (El que se comercialice) pero para el prototipo elegir uno más económico. Encontramos chapas de aluminio, chapas de hierro, chapas de acero inoxidable y de chapa galvanizada, elegir una de aluminio lograría que el producto sea liviano pero el aluminio es extremadamente caro y los costos se irían por los cielos, de igual forma esto pasaría con el inoxidable, que nos ofrecería mayor protección en el sentido de la limpieza de las pinturas pero que realmente no valía la pena. Por otro lado, estaba la chapa galvanizada, que es difícil de soldar y más accesible y las de hierro que en comparación con las demás son económicas, así que por ahora estamos viendo estas dos últimas opciones como posibilidades, pero necesitamos conseguir muestras de material para entender mejor como se comportarían, si necesitarían pliegues para mejorar su estabilidad al ser laminas tan grandes o cualquier otra complicación que pueda surgir.

We started to talk about the internal structure of our product, if we would have a chassis to hold the casing, how this chassis would be and this is something that is really stressing us and worrying us a lot because both the electronic system and the body of the product work together. In our product both have to evolve continuously because in projects of other colleagues they can develop the mechanism and only at the end think about the chassis that will contain it.

Comenzamos a hablar de la estructura interna de nuestro producto, si contaríamos con un chasis para sostener la carcasa, como seria este chasis y esto es algo que realmente nos esta estresando y preocupando un montón porque tanto el sistema electrónico como el cuerpo del producto trabajan a la par. En nuestro producto ambos deber ir evolucionando continuamente ya que en proyectos de otros compañeros ellos pueden desarrollar el mecanismo y recién al final pensar el chasis que lo contendrá.

We also started to see possibilities for the LCD interface of the product, as to understand and mentalize what we will need to achieve it and how we are going to carry it out. We still have a lot of doubts regarding materialities, systems, locations or joints, but week by week we are making progress in order to rule out doubts and I really hope that we can take advantage of the time to solve them one by one.

También empezamos a ver posibilidades para la interfaz LCD del producto, como para ir entendiendo y mentalizándonos de que vamos a necesitar para lograrlo y como lo vamos a llevar a cabo. Todavía tenemos muchas dudas con respecto a materialidades, sistemas, ubicaciones u uniones, pero semana a semana logramos avanzar para ir descartando dudas y realmente espero que podamos aprovechar el tiempo para irlos resolviendo uno por uno.

What do you think of the developments and doubts that have arisen? I really think that we are at a very critical moment and I am a little afraid that we will lose a lot of time in the chassis and casing section of the product, so I will do everything possible so that together with my group we can overcome this critical moment. ¿Qué les parecen los avances y dudas que han surgido? Realmente creo que estamos en un momento muy crítico y tengo un poco de miedo de que perdamos mucho tiempo en el apartado del chasis y carcasa del producto así que haré todo lo posible para que junto a mi grupo podamos superar este momento crítico.
