today I leave you a literary review for the weekend by an American writer, Greg Iles, although he was born in Stuttgart where his father ran a medical clinic.
When he returned to the USA he settled in Natchez on the Mississippi where he set most of his novels.
I must admit that, at the time of buying the book, I didn't know the author from a literary point of view, and this despite the fact that I have read quite a few books in this literary genre, all of them in my library.
I found out on the Internet that Greg Iles had actually been writing for several years and that he had found his greatest success with his first novel, Spandau Phoenix, a worldwide bestseller, a real bestseller that even entered the top ten of the New York Times in 1993, which is an excellent letter of introduction and something unusual for a first-time writer.
I also learned that after publishing the book I am going to tell you about today, he had a tremendous car accident in which he almost lost his life, his right leg was amputated below the knee and he was in a coma for several days.
The book is called The Devil's Punchbowl and here is my review.
The economic crisis has hit the Mississippi hard and in an attempt to find a way out of it, the mayor of Natchez, Penn Cage, is allowing casino boats to set up on the river without caring too much about the damage they cause to the environment or the social deterioration that this implies.
The only thing he is interested in is the money that goes into the coffers of the local municipality.
The objective is gradually taking on its real dimension and that is to bring in an increasing number of gamblers from the "gambling paradise", i.e. Las Vegas.
The problem is that, as always in these cases, gambling brings with it corruption, degradation, prostitution and so many other social scourges that have stigmatised it since time immemorial. Even to the point of murder when someone wants to denounce to the authorities (naturally involved) the process of moral and social degradation in progress.
As it happens to Tim Jessup who is properly the childhood friend of the local mayor who was trying with all the resources at his disposal to put an end to the whole sinister web.
In his previous role as district attorney, Penn Cage had had dozens of murderers sentenced to death and believed he had seen the worst of the human condition. But he was wrong.
For Natchez, in fact, a small town in the American South, seems at first glance a quiet place, a town with a Confederate tradition rich in history if now somewhat decadent, struggling with a prestigious past and a present with serious economic problems, and trying to regain its former glory and prosperity without neglecting one of its main problems: the constant latent racial tensions.
And into this bleak and somewhat claustrophobic panorama steps the Magnolia Queen, a floating casino moored on the banks of the Mississippi that in reality reveals itself to be a meeting point for drug dealers, underground dogfighting organisers, prostitution and degradation brought about by the temptation of easy money that wreaks havoc in gambling.
The plot unfolds between Cage's intention to fight the forces of evil, the burden of failure for failing to defend his friend, and what will later be revealed as a lonely hunt between the local authorities, the police themselves and the owners of the floating casinos, none of whom are willing to help him in his crusade.

hoy les dejo una reseña literaria para el fin de semana de un escritor estadounidense, Greg Iles, aunque nacido en Stuttgart donde su padre administraba una clínica médica.
Cuando regresa a los EE. UU. se radica en Natchez en el Mississippi donde ambienta la mayor parte de sus novelas.
Devo admitir que, al momento de comprar el libro, no conocía literariamente a su autor, y eso a pesar de que en ese género literario tengo leídos bastantes libros, todos presentes en mi biblioteca.
Consultando Internet me enteré que en realidad Greg Iles estaba escribiendo ya desde hacía varios años y que su mayor éxito lo había encontrado con su primera novela titulada El Prisionero de Spandau, un bestseller mundial, un auténtico éxito de ventas que entró incluso en el top-ten del New York Times en el año 1993, lo cuál es una excelente carta de presentación y algo inusual para un debutante como escritor.
Me enteré también que después de publicar el libro que hoy les voy a comentar tuvo un tremendo accidente automovilístico en el que casi pierde la vida, le fue amputada la pierna derecha por debajo de la rodilla y estuvo en coma farmacológico por varios días.
El libro se titula El Peso de las Pruebas y aquí les dejo mi reseña.
La crisis económica ha golpeado con fuerza el Misisipì y tratando de encontrar una salida que permita el fluir de recursos el alcalde de Natchez, Penn Cage, permite que unos barcos casino se instalen en el río sin importarle demasiado ni el daño que provocan al medio ambiente ni el deterioro social que ello implica.
Lo único que le interesa es el dinero que va a parar a las arcas del municipio local.
El objetivo de a poco va cobrando su real dimensión y es el de traer una cantidad cada vez más creciente de jugadores del "paraíso del juego", es decir Las Vegas.
El problema es que, como sucede siempre en estos casos, el juego lleva consigo la corrupción, la degradación la prostitución y tantas otras lacras sociales que justamente lo han estigmatizado desde tiempos inmemoriales. Hasta llegar al asesinato cuando alguien quiere denunciar a las autoridades (naturalmente implicadas) sobre el proceso de degradación moral y social en acto.
Como le sucede a Tim Jessup que es propiamente el amigo de la infancia del alcalde local quien estaba tratando con todos los recursos a su alcance de acabar con todo el siniestro entramado.
En su función anterior como fiscal del distrito, Penn Cage había hecho condenar a decenas de asesinos a la pena capital y creía haber visto lo peor de la condición humana. Sin embargo se equivocaba.
Porque Natchez, en realidad, una pequeña ciudad en el sur de Estados Unidos, parece a simple vista un lugar tranquilo, una ciudad con tradición confederada rica en historia aunque en la actualidad algo decadente, que lucha contra un pasado prestigioso y un presente con serios problemas económicos y trata de recuperar su antigua gloria y prosperidad sin descuidar uno de sus problemas principales: las constantes tensiones raciales latentes.
Y en este panorama sombrío y un poco claustrofóbico hace su irrupción el Magnolia Queen, un casino flotante amarrado en las orillas del Misisipí que en realidad se revela como el punto de encuentro entre traficantes, organizadores de peleas de perros clandestinas, prostitución y degrado ocasionados por la tentación del dinero fácil que hace estragos en el juego.
La trama se desarrolla entre la intención de Cage de luchar contra las fuerzas del mal, el peso del fracaso por no haber podido defender a su amigo y lo que más tarde se revelará como una cacería solitaria entre las autoridades locales, la propia policía y los dueños de los casinos flotantes, ninguno de los cuáles está dispuesto a ayudarlo en su cruzada.
