The festival of the pearls that were almost not picked up
Das Festival der beinahe nicht geborgenen Perlen.
Before the year 2024 closes its doors for good, I thought it would be a good time to have a quick look at all those artists whose invitations to the Jazz Matinée have already been confirmed, but who haven't yet had the chance to perform. Reason enough to make up for lost time and organise a festival at the end of the year to give those who thought I had simply passed them over a chance to perform.
Bevor das Jahr 2024 seine Pforten endgültig schließt, dachte ich mir, es wäre die ideale Gelegenheit noch schnell meinen Blick auf all jene Künstler zu richten, deren Einladung zur Jazz-Matinee eigentlich schon als beschlossene Sache galt, es aber trotz alledem zu keinem Auftritt kam. Grund genug, Versäumtes nachzuholen und zum Jahresabschluss ein Festival aufzuziehen, um auch jenen noch einen Auftritt zu ermöglichen, die wohl glaubten, ich hätte sie einfach übergangen.
Tovte – Not only for Klezmer fans
The album entitled ‘Bukovina’, which was released this year, is based on works by the poet Rose Ausländer, who dedicated an entire work to her old homeland in the Carpathian Mountains under this title. The quintet ‘Tovte’ transformed these myths and fairy tales into modern, musical narratives. This is demonstrated by the successful arrangements, which breathe joy and freshness into traditional Klezmer with a great deal of improvisation. Just a few years ago, the band practised their form of jazz exclusively on the street.
Das in diesem Jahr erschienene Album mit dem Titel „Bukowina“ lehnt sich an Werke der Lyrikerin Rose Ausländer an, die unter diesem Titel ein komplettes Werk ihrer alten Heimat in den Karpaten widmete. Das Quintett »Tovte« setzte diese Mythen und Märchen in moderne, musikalische Erzählungen um. Dies beweisen die gelungenen Arrangements, die mit viel Improvisation Spielfreude und jede Menge Frische dem traditionellen Klezmer einhauchen. Die Band praktizierte ihre Form von Jazz noch vor wenigen Jahren ausschließlich auf der Straße.
The Bad Plus – Originality with lots of emotion
With ‘Complex Emotions’, ‘The Bad Plus’ released an album in 2024 that was described by critics as follows: The musicians impress with their graceful musicality and tell a story that is rich in striking and surprising solutions, but also communicative and full of authentic emotions. This music is captivating. The musicians themselves comment: ‘With this new album and this new music, we are making a statement to show that this version of the band has really found itself.’
Mit „Complex Emotions“ veröffentlichte »The Bad Plus« 2024 ein Album, das von der Kritik wie folgt beschrieben wird: Die Musiker beeindrucken durch ihre anmutige Musikalität und erzählen eine Geschichte, die reich an markanten und überraschenden Lösungen, aber auch kommunikativ und voller authentischer Emotionen ist. Diese Musik fesselt. Die Musiker selbst merken dazu an: „Mit diesem neuen Album und dieser neuen Musik setzen wir ein Zeichen, um zu zeigen, dass diese Version der Band wirklich zu sich selbst gefunden hat.“
Freedom Tree – Modern Acoustic World Jazz Rock
The term 'Modern Acoustic World Jazz Rock' is not a description of the genre of jazz in which 'Freedom Tree' can be found, but rather the title of the live LP that has now been released by the band.The band consists of the following musicians: acoustic guitarist Steinar Aadnekvam from Bergen, Norway, bassist Rubem Farias from Salvador Da Bahia, Brazil, and drummer/vocalist Deodato Siquir from Maputo, Mozambique. The album was recorded live in one take, in a recording studio rather than on stage, but this does not impact the quality of the recording.
„Modern Acoustic World Jazz Rock“ ist nicht etwa eine Beschreibung dessen, in welcher Sparte des Jazz »Freedom Tree« zu finden ist, sondern der Name der Live-LP, die jetzt von der Band veröffentlicht wurde.Die Band setzt sich zusammen aus diesen Musikern: der Akustikgitarrist Steinar Aadnekvam aus Bergen, Norwegen, der Bassist Rubem Farias aus Salvador Da Bahia, Brasilien, und der Schlagzeuger/Sänger Deodato Siquir aus Maputo, Mosambik.Wichtig anzumerken bei dem Album scheint mir, dass es sich nur bedingt um ein Live-Album handelt. Es wurde zwar live und in einem Take eingespielt – aber eben nicht auf einer Bühne, sondern im Tonstudio. Was allerdings die Qualität in keinster Weise negativ beeinflusst.
Dock in Absolute – From Luxembourg out into the world of jazz
If someone claims to have an album on their record player that reminds them of a musical kaleidoscope of diverse compositions and a wealth of moods, then they could very well be talking about the album 'Reflect' by the Luxembourg formation 'Dock in Absolute'. At least, that's my assessment of what Jean-Philippe Koch (piano), Arne Wiegant (bass) and Victor Kraus (drums) serve up, where the most diverse styles of jazz are combined with elements of classical and rock music to form a harmonious whole that can also be described as lively, varied, powerful, penetrating and rich in mood changes.
Wenn dieser Tage jemand behauptet, er hätte ein Album auf dem Plattenteller gehabt, welches ihn an ein musikalisches Kaleidoskop unterschiedlichster Kompositionen und einer Fülle von Stimmungen erinnert, dann könnte es sehr wohl sein, dass die Rede vom Album „Reflect“ der Luxemburger Formation »Dock in Absolute« ist. So zumindest meine Einschätzung zu dem, was mir Jean-Philippe Koch am Piano, Arne Wiegant am Bass und Victor Kraus am Schlagzeug servieren.Hier werden die verschiedensten Stile des Jazz mit Bestandteilen der Klassik und der Rockmusik zu einem harmonischen Ganzen geführt.Man kann es auch so ausdrücken: spritzig, abwechslungsreich, kraftvoll, eindringlich, reich an Stimmungsschwankungen.
Ilja Ruf Trio – A new interpretation of classic mainstream Jazz
The Ilja Ruf Trio is responsible for the acrylic disc entitled 'Halftime Show'. It's only been on sale since November 2024, but it has already attracted a lot of attention in the jazz world. Clearly defined themes on the basis of harmonic structures, paired with interesting arrangements, captivating solo parts and an outstanding vocal performance - modernised. As an instrumentalist, singer and composer, Ilja Ruf is one of the most exciting and outstanding talents of his generation, and it is easy to forget that he is only 23 years old. Building on his classical training, he works in a wide range of styles, from jazz, pop, tango, Klezmer, film music and orchestral music to classical music.
Die Acryl-Scheibe mit der Beschriftung „Halftime Show“, für deren Entstehung das »Ilja Ruf Trio« die Verantwortung trägt, ist zwar erst seit November 2024 im Handel, hat aber dennoch bereits für viel Aufmerksamkeit in der Jazz-Welt gesorgt. Klar definierte Themen , die auf harmonischen Strukturen basieren, gepaart mit interessanten Arrangements, fesselnden Soloparts und einer hervorragenden Gesangsleistung modernisiert. Daher auch meine Sicht auf den Mainstream im modernen Kleid.Man ist geneigt zu vergessen, dass Ilja Ruf erst 23 Jahre alt ist, zählt aber als Instrumentalist, Sänger und Komponist zu den aufregendsten und derzeit herausragendsten Talenten seiner Generation. Aufbauend auf einer klassischen Ausbildung arbeitet er in einem weiten stilistischen Feld von Jazz über Pop, Tango, Klezmer, Film- und Orchestermusik bis hin zur Klassik.
OTOOTO – Melancholy & Nostalgia with a strong dash of Dynamism
OTOOTO are from Denmark and exactly two months ago, with the release of their album '2nd Quake', they proved once again that electronics do not have to be fanatical eclecticism, but can lead to a clean, self-contained sound when used in the right doses. OTOOTO, consisting of Jonas Due (trumpet and flügelhorn), Oilly Wallace (alto saxophone and flute), Calle Brickman (keyboards), Andreas Svendsen (drums and percussion) and Matthias Petri (bass), have been an integral part of the Danish and international jazz scene since their debut album 'This Love Is For You' (2021). When asked about the album, the band replied: "Our mission is to reflect modern society and give its vibrations a sound. And through this sound we want to convey purity, love, and joy.
»OTOOTO« stammen aus Dänemark und lieferten vor genau zwei Monaten mit dem Album „2nd Quake“ erneut einen Beweis dafür ab, dass die Elektronik nicht gleichzeitig fanatischer Eklektizismus sein muss, sondern richtig dosiert zu einem sauberen, in sich geschlossenen Sound münden kann. Julian Argüelles – Not thrifty with fire and expressions
Right at the beginning, I have a look at the reactions of the specialised press. They have given the new album 'Double Speak' by Julien Argülles a lot of attention. They summed it up as follows, "There are many great and unusual ideas, it's groovy, sometimes even atmospheric, and there's also plenty of room for blazing solos. A great album from this very talented artist. Julian's brother Steve Argüelles and long-time collaborators Martin France and Helge Andrea Norbakken each bring their own percussive personalities to the palette of virtual spaces Julian creates. Ultimately, however, the album showcases Argüelles' unadulterated personality: adventurous, fearlessly improvisational, but always emotionally direct and engagingly melodic.
Gleich zu Beginn werfe ich einen Blick in die Reaktionen der Fachpresse, die sich ausgiebig mit dem neuen Album „Double Speak“ von Julien Argülles beschäftigt hat. Da lese ich dann folgende Zusammenfassung: „Es gibt viele großartige und ungewöhnliche Ideen, es ist groovig, manchmal sogar atmosphärisch, und es gibt auch viel Raum für feurige Soli. Ein großartiges Album dieses sehr talentierten Künstlers.“ Julians Bruder Steve Argüelles und seine langjährigen Mitarbeiter Martin France und Helge Andrea Norbakken bringen jeweils ihre eigenen Persönlichkeiten als Perkussionisten in die Palette der virtuellen Räume ein, die Julian erschafft, aber letztlich präsentiert das Album die unverfälschte Persönlichkeit von Argüelles: abenteuerlustig, furchtlos improvisierend, aber immer emotional direkt und einnehmend melodisch.
