Toward European Certification
The European Certification Authority for Autonomous Vehicles (ECAAV) had been created by the European Commission in 2025, almost simultaneously with NAAVCA. The two organizations worked together and the 99% of requirements for certification were the same.
At the annual Autonomous Truck Conference, where they presented their level 4 self-driving truck software system, Nestor and Moana met many people interested in their software products, most notably future customers.
In August, they had met for the first time physically Kurt, a German engineer who had already worked as a consultant in autonomous vehicle certification. They already had been in contact with Kurt for several months.
They agreed with Kurt that he would create a limited company called "NeMo Europe" and that the NeMo Trucking Software company would own one-third of the shares. They would deliver all the certification documentation to Kurt's company so that he would be able to start the certification process with ECAAV.
Some adaptation was needed, but mostly in data files. For example, road signs were different. Fortunately, they were almost the same in all European countries, which was not the case 40 years before. But it was not a big problem as there already existed road sign picture databases that were freely available; they simply needed to be adapted to the NeMo software.
Another adaptation was in the languages for displaying text. The NeMo software was already available in English, French, and Spanish. Data files for other languages were needed: German, Italian, Portuguese, Danish, Polish, Hungarian, Romanian, etc...
At the conference, Nestor and Moana were able to tell the prospective customers that the European certification process would start very soon, done by NeMo Europe.
After the conference, Nestor and Moana went back to British Columbia. Shortly after their return, they had to deal with an emergency: a truck using NeMo software had had a big accident in Idaho while in autonomous mode.
