Tank Force (Arcade) Quick Review (ENG/ESP)

As I recently reviewed Battle City for the NES, often known due to its appearance in bootleg NES carts (mainly the Polystation, which is a PS1-shaped bootleg NES with several cartridges in one popular in Latin America), it definitely feels like one of those not that popular yet very fondly remembered by those that knew of this game. However, Namco made an arcade exclusive sequel to Battle City (only recently ported to Switch in 2017 as part of Namco Museum) called Tank Force, and it definitely feels like Battle City but with a lot of new additions and enemies, like fast cars that drop dynamite and huge tanks with armor.

With superior arcade hardware powering this game, there's a lot of colors and different settings for each stage, bosses at certain levels, and music playing over stages; there's even a stage theme that starts with the Battle City's jingle into an entirely new song! While the addition of bosses and increased density of enemies can make the game much more challenging than its predecessor, all the classic power-ups are back (and now spawn randomly at any point) along with three new power-ups: A wave gun that can go through walls, a missile launcher that makes more damage to bosses (and one-shots light armored tanks), and a power-up that makes you smaller and faster.

Enemies will now always spawn from both the top and the side borders of the screen, and the assistance of a second player might be vital in order to avoid the base being destroyed. However, players are now not allowed to destroy their own base walls, and shooting at each other will only push them back a bit instead of stunning them. On top of the benefits of having a friend to co-op this game, a certain version of this game (that sadly isn't in the Switch re-release) actually supported four-player multiplayer! I am aware that there are several Battle City romhacks out there; one of which adds four player support to the game with multi-tap, but Tank Force definitely feels cooler in this aspect as the game is already bigger and harder, so having two extra partners will come handy.

As I had got through the entire game some few days ago with a buddy, I could see all of the 36 levels the game offered; there was one neat map that was a Pac-Man nod (complete with a hidden message from Pac-Man himself). The craziest thing was the final boss however, as it consisted of FOUR moving turrets, so both of us died a lot there until we finally got through. It was still relatively lenient though (at least involuntarily), as being an emulated arcade game, we could just use Free Play to have infinite continues, but it definitely looks like a real challenge if you were up to use limited credits try a one-credit run.

If you already enjoyed Battle City a lot and always thought about how a new game would be, or wanted to have a bigger challenge to play with a buddy (or buddies), Tank Force delivers greatly as a freshly updated sequel from Namco with all the charm and modernization from their excellent skill for sprites during the 90s.

Como recientemente revisé Battle City para la NES, a menudo conocido debido a su aparición en carros bootleg de NES (principalmente la Polystation, que es una NES bootleg con forma de PS1 con varios cartuchos en uno popular en América Latina), definitivamente se siente como uno de esos no tan populares pero muy recordados por aquellos que conocieron este juego. Sin embargo, Namco hizo una secuela exclusiva para arcade de Battle City (sólo recientemente portado a Switch en 2017 como parte de Namco Museum) llamada Tank Force, y definitivamente se siente como Battle City pero con un montón de nuevas adiciones y enemigos, como coches rápidos que lanzan dinamita y enormes tanques con armadura.

Con un hardware arcade superior, este juego tiene muchos colores y diferentes escenarios para cada fase, jefes en ciertos niveles y música que suena en las fases; ¡incluso hay un tema de fase que empieza con el jingle de Battle City y se convierte en una canción totalmente nueva! Aunque la adición de jefes y la mayor densidad de enemigos pueden hacer que el juego sea mucho más desafiante que su predecesor, todos los potenciadores clásicos están de vuelta (y ahora aparecen aleatoriamente en cualquier punto) junto con tres nuevos potenciadores: Un cañón de ondas que puede atravesar las paredes, un lanzamisiles que hace más daño a los jefes (y dispara a los tanques con blindaje ligero), y un potenciador que te hace más pequeño y más rápido.

Ahora los enemigos aparecerán siempre por los bordes superior y lateral de la pantalla, y la ayuda de un segundo jugador puede ser vital para evitar que la base sea destruida. Sin embargo, ahora no se permite a los jugadores destruir las paredes de su propia base, y dispararse unos a otros sólo los hará retroceder un poco en lugar de aturdirlos. Además de los beneficios de tener un amigo para cooperar en este juego, una versión de este juego (que lamentablemente no está en la reedición de Switch) ¡realmente soportaba el multijugador para cuatro jugadores! Soy consciente de que hay varios romhacks de Battle City; uno de ellos añade soporte para cuatro jugadores al juego con multitap, pero Tank Force definitivamente se siente más fresco en este aspecto, ya que el juego ya es más grande y más difícil, por lo que tener dos compañeros adicionales será muy útil.

Como me pasé todo el juego hace unos días con un compañero, pude ver los 36 niveles que ofrecía el juego; había un mapa muy bonito que era un guiño a Pac-Man (con un mensaje oculto del propio Pac-Man). Sin embargo, lo más loco era el jefe final, ya que consistía en CUATRO torretas móviles, así que ambos morimos mucho allí hasta que finalmente lo superamos. Sin embargo, fue relativamente indulgente (al menos involuntariamente), ya que al ser un juego arcade emulado, podíamos usar el Juego Libre para tener continuaciones infinitas, pero definitivamente parece un verdadero desafío si te animas a usar créditos limitados para intentar una carrera de un solo crédito.

Si ya disfrutaste mucho de Battle City y siempre pensaste en cómo sería un nuevo juego, o querías tener un reto mayor para jugar con un amigo (o amigos), Tank Force cumple con creces como secuela recién actualizada de Namco con todo el encanto y la modernización de su excelente habilidad para los sprites durante los 90.
