Robbert Duijf – When the blues goes travelling with jazz
Following “Change Myself”, Robbert Duijf is releasing his next album on the market with ”Silver Spoon”. Here too, the winner of the European Blues Challenge 2024 remains true to his style and embeds his melodies in the rhythm of the blues with a little dash of gospel. Somewhat reminiscent of the compositions of Charley Patton or John Lee Hooker. But what sets him apart from these greats of the blues is that he incorporates elements of European jazz. The editor of ‘Jazz-Fun’ has this to say about the album: “It seems as if everything has been there before, but a well-played blues will always make us happy. After all, that's where it all began. Robbert Duijf redefines what was invented years ago, and he doesn't hesitate to give us this music, just like that, from the heart.”
Nach „Change Myself“ bringt Robbert Duijf mit „Silver Spoon“ sein nächstes Album auf den Markt. Der Gewinner der European Blues Challenge 2024 bleibt auch hier seinem Stil treu und bettet seine Melodien in den Rhythmus des Blues mit einem kleinen Schuss Gospel. Ein wenig erinnernd an die Kompositionen eines Charley Patton oder John Lee Hooker. Was ihn allerdings von diesen Größen des Blues unterscheidet – dass er Elemente des europäischen Jazz mit einfließen lässt. Der Chefredakteur von »Jazz-Fun« gibt folgenden Kommentar zu dem Album ab: „Es scheint, als wäre alles schon einmal da gewesen, aber ein gut gespielter Blues wird uns immer glücklich machen. Schließlich hat damit alles angefangen. Robbert Duijf definiert neu, was vor Jahren erfunden wurde, und er zögert nicht, uns diese Musik zu schenken, einfach so, von Herzen.“
Isabelle Olivier – When the harp determines the melody
It is in France that we meet harpist Isabelle Olivier, who claims that her compositions are largely characterised by her passion for impressionism. She has now presented the best proof of this with the album ‘Impressions’. This is how the press assesses the work: “In the pieces, which are enriched with improvisation and based on jazz phrases, we find a multitude of memorable melodic motifs and beautiful sounds and harmonies of many instruments. The harp is only a pretext for the use of many other instruments, which occasionally take on the role of melodic lead. The album is structured, musically arranged into a whole, although there are many paths and many musical landscapes. Colourful music, great arrangement ideas and beautiful melodies make the album a captivating listening experience.” Explaining her inspiration, she says: “I see impressionism as a combination of elegance, minimalism, spectrums, feelings, and vibrations - things you can feel but can't explain. When you look at impressionist art, it's like becoming part of nature, to the point where you forget you're human. I love that feeling.”
In Frankreich treffen wir die Harfenistin Isabelle Olivier, die von sich selbst behauptet, ihre Kompositionen seien nicht unerheblich geprägt von ihrer Leidenschaft für den Impressionismus. Der beste Beweis dafür legt sie nun mit dem Album „Impressions“ vor. Die Presse schätzt das Werk so ein: „In den mit Improvisation angereicherten Stücken, die auf Jazzphrasen basieren, finden wir eine Vielzahl von einprägsamen melodischen Motiven und schönen Klängen und Harmonien vieler Instrumente. Die Harfe ist nur ein Vorwand für den Einsatz vieler anderer Instrumente, die hin und wieder die Rolle der melodischen Führung übernehmen. Das Album ist strukturiert, musikalisch zu einem Ganzen arrangiert, obwohl es viele Wege und viele musikalische Landschaften gibt. Farbenfrohe Musik, großartige Arrangement-Ideen und wunderschöne Melodien machen das Album zu einem fesselnden Hörerlebnis.“ Sie erklärt ihre Inspiration mit diesen Worten: „Ich betrachte den Impressionismus als eine Kombination aus Eleganz, Minimalismus, Spektren, Gefühlen und Schwingungen - Dinge, die man fühlen, aber nicht erklären kann. Wenn man impressionistische Kunst betrachtet, ist es, als würde man Teil der Natur, bis zu dem Punkt, an dem man vergisst, dass man ein Mensch ist. Ich liebe dieses Gefühl.“
Simin Tander – When music accompanies the lyrics
If someone calls her album ‘The Wind’, you have every right to be curious about where these winds will blow the listener. While born in Cologne, Simin Tander has been performing internationally for some time now and was honoured with the German Jazz Award / Vocal Category in 2024. At that time (although this still holds true today), it was said: ‘Fascinating, fleeting sounds, interesting developments in the following songs. In her music, Simin Tander definitely concentrates on the mood. There is an intellectual level too, which is expressed in both the lyrics and the music. It is a beautiful album that captivates with its multi-layered sounds and invites you to listen attentively.’ For her new album, Simin Tander invited Swedish bassist Björn Meyer, Swiss drummer Samuel Rohrer and Indian-born violinist Harpreet Bansa into the recording studio. With Afghan roots herself, the artist calls the project a ‘cosmos of sound that spans the globe’.
Wenn jemand sein Album „The Wind“ nennt, darf man mit Recht gespannt sein, wo diese Lüfte den Zuhörer hin verwehen. Zwar in Köln geboren, aber seit längerer Zeit bereits international agierend, wurde Simin Tander 2024 mit dem „Deutschen Jazzpreis / Kategorie Vokal“ ausgezeichnet. Damals (was allerdings auch heutzutage noch seine Geltung hat) hieß es: „Faszinierende, flüchtige Klänge, interessante Entwicklungen in den folgenden Liedern. Simin Tander konzentriert sich in ihrer Musik definitiv auf die Stimmung. Es gibt auch eine intellektuelle Ebene, die sowohl in den Texten als auch in der Musik zum Ausdruck kommt. Ein wunderschönes Album, das mit seinen vielschichtigen Klängen fesselt und zum aufmerksamen Hinhören einlädt.“ Für das neue Album bat Simin Tander den schwedischen Bassisten Björn Meyer, den Schweizer Schlagzeuger Samuel Rohrer und die indischstämmigen Geigerin Harpreet Bansa mit ins Tonstudio. Da die Künstlerin selbst über afghanische Wurzeln verfügt, nennt sie das Projekt einen „weltumspannenden Klangkosmos“.
Simona De Rosa – Confusion suddenly becomes a project
‘’Feathers‘’, the title of Simona De Rosa's new album, is intended to unite the folk tradition of Ireland with the Cuban rhythm and melodies of Bulgarian choirs. That this particular endeavour can lead to confusion should not really come as a surprise. And probably not even the artist herself, who has signalled this by changing her name. Therefore, the name responsible for ‘Feathers’ is: Simona De Rosa with Confusion Project. This assessment reflects just how much the album inspires: ‘A wonderful, versatile and captivating album! While Simona De Rosa unfolds her vocal strengths with impressive expressiveness, the Confusion Project accompanies her with virtuosity and blossoms in improvisation. This is much more than just a vocal album - it offers a wealth of great music, played with passion, ease and joy. From jazz and world music to traditional sounds and rousing songs - this is where musical diversity meets first-class entertainment.’
„Feathers“, so der Titel des neuen Albums von Simona De Rosa, soll die Folk-Tradition Irlands mit dem kubanischen Rhythmus und den Melodien bulgarischer Chöre vereinen. Dass es bei diesem speziellen Vorhaben zu Konfusionen kommen kann, sollte nicht wirklich verwundern. Wohl auch die Künstlerin selbst nicht, die dies mit der Namensänderung bekundet. Für “Feathers“ zeigt sich somit verantwortlich: Simona De Rosa with Confusion Project. Wie sehr das Album begeistert, spiegelt sich in dieser Einschätzung wieder: „Ein wundervolles, vielseitiges und mitreißendes Album! Simona De Rosa entfaltet ihre stimmlichen Stärken mit beeindruckender Ausdruckskraft, während das Confusion Project sie virtuos begleitet und in der Improvisation aufblüht. Dies ist weit mehr als ein reines Gesangsalbum – es bietet eine Fülle großartiger Musik, gespielt mit Leidenschaft, Leichtigkeit und Spielfreude. Von Jazz über Weltmusik bis hin zu traditionellen Klängen und mitreißenden Songs – hier trifft musikalische Vielfalt auf erstklassige Unterhaltung.“
Horst Hansen Trio – The Quintet that pretends to be a Trio
They refer to themselves as the biggest trio in the world and are breaking new ground with their new album ‘Sophisticated’, and not just musically. Forget jeans and T-shirts. Now the finest threads are the order of the day. But they have dispensed with velvet and silk for the compositions. There is hardly any ‘Over-Jazz’ as practised before. It is replaced by an exquisite mixture of Jazz, Rock, Hip-Hop and Avant-Garde elements. They themselves describe the album ‘Sophisticated’ as a journey from Bielefeld via London to Paris. I have travelled this route several times and was curious to see what new impressions would be revealed to me. The critics' assessment of the journey: ’The musicians of the Horst Hansen Trio are known for their creative and surprising ideas, which not only set unexpected accents, but also open up new perspectives on the music. Their playing combines pure joy, rousing rhythms and exuberant danceability. At the same time, they skilfully interweave elements of jazz with ethnic and experimental influences, demonstrating their impressive musicality and interpretative skills.’
Sie selbst bezeichnen sich als „das größte Trio der Welt“ und gehen mit dem neuen Album „Sophisticated“ nicht nur musikalisch ganz neue Wege. Vergessen sind die Jeans und T-Shirts. Ab sofort ist feinster Zwirn angesagt. Allerdings hat man für die Kompositionen auf Samt und Seide verzichtet. Den zuvor praktizierten „Überjazz“ gibt es nahezu kaum noch. Er wird abgelöst von einer exquisiten Mischung aus Jazz, Rock, Hip-Hop und avantgardistischen Elementen. Sie selbst nennen das Album „Sophisticated“ als eine Reise von Bielefeld über London nach Paris. Ich, der diese Wegstrecke bereits mehrmals zurückgelegt hat, war gespannt welche neuen Eindrücke mir offenbart werden. Die Kritik bewertet die Reise so: „Die Musiker des Horst Hansen Trios sind bekannt für ihre kreativen und überraschenden Ideen, die nicht nur unerwartete Akzente setzen, sondern auch neue Perspektiven auf die Musik eröffnen. Ihr Spiel vereint pure Freude, mitreißende Rhythmen und ausgelassene Tanzbarkeit. Gleichzeitig verweben sie geschickt Elemente des Jazz mit ethnischen und avantgardistischen Einflüssen und demonstrieren dabei ihre beeindruckende Musikalität und interpretatorische.“
