How much rock and folk can jazz take without losing its flavour?
Wie viel Rock und Folk kann der Jazz vertragen ohne an Reiz zu verlieren?
After the release of the album “Still Moving” in 2021, the duo Justin Adams and Mauro Durante are back with “Sweet Release”. And it contains more than enough musical material for a discussion on the principles of jazz music. Four years ago, it was generally assumed that the collaboration between the guitarist and the violin and tambourine expert would be limited to this one project. Thereafter, everyone would go their own way. A misconception, though. The Duo continues to evolve, and so does the style of the music they create.
Nach 2021, als das Album »Still Moving« veröffentlicht wurde, präsentiert das Duo Justin Adams und Mauro Durante mit »Sweet Release« den Nachfolger. Und der birgt genügend musikalisches Material zur Diskussion über Grundsätze im Jazz. Vor vier Jahren wurde eigentlich allgemein vermutet, dass die Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem Gitarristen und dem Könner an der Violine und dem Tambourin sich auf dies eine Projekt beschränkt und im Anschluss jeder wieder seine eigenen Wege einschlägt. Falsch gedacht. Das Duo entwickelte sich weiter und dementsprechend auch der Stil ihrer Kompositionen.
Before I turn to my own assessment and the reactions from the offices of the music critics, I would like to introduce the two musicians to you.
Justin Alexander Adams was born in London (UK) on 22 July 1961. He is the son of a diplomat. He is a guitarist, composer, and producer who spent his youth in Cairo. The impressions that he picked up there are still present in his music today, which he himself describes as world music with a strong tendency towards jazz. On his return to the UK, he initially favoured punk. However, he soon found his way to Portuguese fado and the traditional music of North Africa. This was the beginning of a cross-pollination of cultures, far beyond the borders of any one country.
Bevor ich mich der eigenen Einschätzung und den Reaktionen aus den Büros der Musikkritiker zuwende, stelle ich die beiden Musiker vor.
Justin Alexander Adams wurde am 22. Juli 1961 als Sohn einer Diplomatenfamilie in London (UK) geboren. Seine Jugend verbrachte der Gitarrist, Komponist und Produzent in Kairo. Die dort eingesogenen Eindrücke fließen noch heute in seine Musik, die er selbst als Weltmusik mit einem ausgeprägten Hang zum Jazz bezeichnet. Obwohl anfänglich, nach seiner Rückkehr nach Großbritannien, mehr dem Punk zugewendet, fand er rasch zum portugiesischen Fado und der traditionellen Musik Nord-Afrikas. So begann der Mix zwischen den Kulturen, weit hinweg über festgesteckte Grenzen.
The composer, violinist, and percussionist Mauro Durante was born in the Puglia region of Italy into a family of musicians. In 1975, his parents founded the now award-winning project ’Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino', for which their son is still responsible to this day. It is a kind of reinvention of Pizzica music, one of the oldest forms of southern Italian folk music. It is deeply rooted in the region of Apulia. However, his musical versatility is not limited to his homeland, as can be seen from his having collaborated with Ibrahim Maalouf, Steward Copeland and Ludovico Einaudi.
Der in der Region Apulien (Italien) geborene Komponist, Geiger und Perkussionist Mauro Durante, wurde in eine Musikerfamilie hineingeboren. Die Eltern gründeten 1975 das inzwischen preisgekrönte Projekt »Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino«, für welches der Sohn noch heute die Verantwortung trägt. Es handelt sich dabei um eine Art von Neuerfindung der Pizzica-Musik, eine der ältesten Formen süditalienischer Volksmusik mit tiefen Wurzeln in der apulischen Region. Doch beschränkt sich die musikalische Vielfalt nicht ausschließlich auf sein Heimatland, was sich an den Zusammenarbeiten mit Ibrahim Maalouf, Steward Copeland oder Ludovico Einaudi beweisen.
What is immediately noticeable in the compositions for 'Sweet Release' are the quite frequent use of elements that one would otherwise expect to find in rock interpretations. What is no less frequent and what immediately surprises me is the interweaving of traditional harmonies of the kind that are often used in folk music. It does not bother me, nor does it strain my ears. The only question I ask myself is: To what extent can world music, which is known to have its origins in jazz, tolerate such influences without losing its independent character? I think a comment in the specialist press is quite appropriate: “The sound and playing concept is by no means innovative, but rather reminiscent of the best examples of the canon, but there is something in the sound that draws attention to itself, not away from the music. The musicians display an unusual artistry and energy.”
Was bei den Kompositionen für »Sweet Release« sofort auffällt, sind die recht häufig eingespielten Elemente, die man ansonsten eher bei rockigen Interpretationen erwarten. Nicht seltener und für mich gleich überraschend, das Einflechten von traditionellen Harmonien, wie sie in der Folk-Musik oft Verwendung finden. Weder stört es mich, noch strapaziert es meine Ohren. Ich stelle mir lediglich die Frage, wie viel die Weltmusik, die bekannterweise aus dem Jazz entstanden ist, an solchen Einflüssen vertragen kann, ohne den eigenständigen Charakter zu verlieren? Eine Anmerkung in der Fachpresse erachte ich recht passend: »Das Klang- und Spielkonzept ist keineswegs innovativ, sondern erinnert eher an die besten Beispiele des Kanons, aber hier ist etwas im Klang, das die Aufmerksamkeit auf sich zieht und nicht aus der Musik herausreißt. Die Musiker zeigen eine ungewöhnliche Spielkunst und Energie.«
On the other hand, I often have a feeling of incomprehension when I read the comments of the 'jazz gurus' with a sharp pencil in the editorial offices of the feature pages during my research on artists. As an example that is not worthy of imitation, I'd like to insert a short passage to illustrate what can end up on paper if you just tinker with ideas long enough. “Three years of touring have turned what was originally an experimental project into a perfectly rehearsed duo. They draw on Durante's roots in Taranta music and combine it with influences from raw rockabilly, Sufi ecstasy and minimalism. The themes of musical healing and catharsis are central. Thanks to their almost intuitive interplay, they recorded the album live, creating magical moments of improvisation.”
Is that a recommendation for a jazz album?
Andererseits fasse ich mir oftmals voller Unverständnis an den Kopf, wenn ich bei der Recherche zu den Künstlern, die Kommentare der »Jazz-Gurus« mit spitzem Bleistift in den Redaktionen des Feuilletons zu lesen bekomme. Als nicht nachahmenswertes Beispiel, füge ich eine kurze Passage ein, die verdeutlichen soll, was alles auf dem Papier landen, wenn man nur lange genug an den Ideen bastelt: »Drei Jahre auf Tour haben aus dem ursprünglich experimentellen Projekt ein perfekt eingespieltes Duo gemacht. Sie greifen auf Durantes Wurzeln in der Taranta-Musik zurück und verbinden diese mit Einflüssen aus rohem Rockabilly, Sufi-Ekstase und Minimalismus. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Themen musikalische Heilung und Katharsis. Dank ihres fast intuitiven Zusammenspiels haben sie das Album live eingespielt und dabei magische improvisierte Momente geschaffen.«
