Hello Hivers✌✌
Welcome to my Blog.
Sorry I have not been updating you guys on our fingerlings hatching project as when due, this is due to the numerous challenges we are facing, the major one being the mobile device we are using has a big issue, but would try my best to update when necessary...
So today we would be injection the Spawning hormone into the female catfish, this is to enable the eggs come out with ease, it's like inducing labour in humans.
There are some materials we will be needing for this operation, which are;
1.a big bowl ; for putting the fish in
- Scoping net
- Salt (to clean and sterilize items to be used)
- Scale
- Ovulin (the spawning hormone)
- Syringe( for injecting the hormone)
- Wet towels (helps in holding the fish still)
First we have to identity the female catfish and weigh it to ascertain the ml of hormone we are going to inject it.
To identify the female catfish, the genitile are not as protruding like that of the male and has a slit opening while the males don't have a slit opening.
After we have identified our female fish, we have to weight it.
The weight of the female fish will determine the amount of spawning hormone to inject. So for that for every 1kg of weight 0.5ml of the Spawning hormone will be injected.
So, our fish weighs 3.3kg which means we are going to inject 1.5ml of the Spawning hormone into the female catfish to induse her eggs to come out.
Also the wet towel should be placed over the head of the fish to make it stay still during this operation.
The Spawning hormone will be injected close to the head were the dorsal fin starts from at and angle of 45degrees..
After injecting the female catfish, the injection site should be massaged a bit to avoid swelling of the area and it should be kept in a separate pond alone and it should be well protected because when the Spawning hormone effects starts , the female catfish will try to jump out of the pond and if it is with other fishes there will be a serious fight, so it is advisable to isolate it in a separate pond..
