I'm going to start this Monday by openly confessing that I thought the WIP challenge ended last week. That's why I went to work at full speed to complete my latest WIP: a new collection of outfits for my doll and shared it with you last Monday, but when I checked the original post, still had several days to spare. At one point this was good because I had the week off to research another "WIP" I've had for over two years: something I've been putting off indefinitely and it's all about learning how to use my sewing machine completely 😅.
Voy a empezar este lunes confesando abiertamente que creía que el desafío WIP terminaba la semana pasada. Es por eso que puse manos a la obra a toda velocidad para completar mi último WIP: una nueva colección de outfits para mi muñeca y lo compartí con ustedes el último lunes, pero cuando chequeé la publicación original, aún tenía varios días de sobra. En cierto punto esto fue bueno porque me quedó la semana libre para investigar otro "WIP" que tengo hace más de dos años: algo que vengo postergando indefinidamente y se trata de aprender a usar mi máquina de coser por completo 😅.
This sewing machine was given to us by my great-aunt several years ago, but we thought it was out of order because of how old it was. In 2020 my sister gave me money for my birthday and I used it to try to fix it, since in the pandemic I had a lot of free time and needed a new hobby. To our good luck, it turns out that it was in very good condition and I have used it non-stop ever since. A short time later I accidentally opened this blog and I was invited to the Needle Work Monday community, so my whole process learning to sew and use the machine is shared with you ❣️.
Esta máquina de coser nos la regaló mi tía abuela hace varios años, pero pensabamos que no funcionaba por lo antigua que era. En el 2020 mi hermana me regaló plata para mi cumpleaños y la usé para intentar arreglarla, ya que en pandemia tenía mucho tiempo libre y necesitaba un nuevo pasatiempos. Para nuestra buena suerte, resulta que estaba en muy buenas condiciones y desde entonces la usé sin parar. Poco tiempo después casualmente abrí este blog y me invitaron a la comunidad Needle Work Monday, así que todo mi proceso aprendiendo a coser y a usar la máquina está compartido con ustedes ❣️.
In all this time I was able to learn the basic things to use what I need, such as straight and zigzag stitches with their different lengths, reverse function, winding the thread, etc. Even though I found the user manual on the Internet (a very good thing because this machine is from 1960), I always avoided reading it because it had a lot of instructions on using other accessories that I didn't have at the time. BUT guess what?
En todo este tiempo pude aprender las cosas básicas para usar lo que necesito, como puntadas rectas y zigzag con sus distintas longitudes, función reversa, bobinar el hilo, etc. Si bien encontré el manual de usuario en Internet (algo muy bueno porque esta máquina es de 1960), siempre esquivé el hecho de leerlo porque tenía muchas instrucciones sobre uso de otros accesorios que en ese momento no tenía. PERO, ¿adivinen qué?
These days my great-aunt is planning a move, so going through all her things and packing to leave, she found the accessories mentioned in the machine manual. She didn't even remember that she still had them, she thought she had lost them but luckily not. And now having this box of stuff in my possession is like having new toys to play with ❤️.
En estos días mi tía abuela está planeando una mudanza, por lo que revisando todas sus cosas y empacando para irse, encontró los accesorios que mencionaba el manual de la máquina. Ella ni siquiera se acordaba de que aún los tenía, pensaba que los había extraviado pero por suerte no. Y ahora tener esta caja con cosas en mi poder es como tener nuevos juguetes para usar ❤️.
Modern machines have all the decorative stitches built into the overall mechanisms, but this machine needs additional accessories to make them. These are small discs that can be combined to form the different desired drawings. In total there are 18 discs (36 faces) that can be combined 3 at a time, in one direction or another as desired. So imagine the number of different drawings that can be achieved with all of them, incredible ❤️.
Las máquinas modernas tienen todas las puntadas decorativas integradas en los mecanismos generales, pero esta máquina necesita accesorios adicionales para hacerlos. Estos son unos pequeños discos que pueden combinarse para formar los distintos dibujos deseados. En total son 18 discos (36 caras) que pueden combinarse de a 3 por vez, en un sentido u otro según se desee. Así que imaginen la cantidad de dibujos diferentes que se pueden lograr con todos ellos, increíble ❤️.

The accessory box also includes a bunch of different machine feet. Some I recognized, like the ones for hemming or the Teflon ones for fabrics that don't slide well, but most of the others I have no idea what they're for. The manual says that with this machine you can make buttonholes and attach buttons, so surely those accessories work for that too. More things to investigate 😅.
La caja de accesorios también incluye un montón de pies de máquina diferentes. Algunos los reconocía, como los de hacer dobladillos o los de teflón para telas que no resbalan bien, pero la mayoría de los demás no tengo idea para qué sirven. El manual dice que con esta máquina se pueden hacer ojales y pegar botones, así que seguramente esos accesorios también sirven para eso. Más cosas para investigar 😅.
There were also several bobbins, an extra bobbin case, threaders and needles. Even the twin needle needed for this machine: I once bought a twin needle but it didn't work for me because the modern design didn't match the old. But now it is the original of the machine, so I will try to test it soon. All this is a real treasure, you don't know how happy I am ❤️.
También habían varias bobinas, un portabobinas adicional, enhebradores y agujas. Incluso la aguja doble necesaria para esta máquina: en una oportunidad compré una aguja doble pero no me sirvió porque el diseño moderno no coincidía con el antiguo. Pero ahora es la original de la máquina, así que pronto intentaré probarla. Todo esto es un verdadero tesoro, no saben lo feliz que estoy ❤️.
This time I was very excited to learn how to use the disks for different stitches so I had to read the manual. It was a bit complex at first so I was glad I found it in Spanish. After a while I understood everything and the truth is that it was quite simple: the first thing to do is assemble the desired combination of discs and insert it into the top cover of the machine 😃.
En esta oportunidad estaba muy entusiasmada por aprender a usar los discos para diferentes puntadas así que obligadamente tuve que leer el manual. Era un poco complejo al principio así que me alegré de haberlo encontrado en español. Después de un rato entendí todo y la verdad es que era bastante sencillo: lo primero que hay que hacer es armar la combinación de discos deseada e introducirla en la tapa superior de la máquina 😃.
What the discs do is activate small levers as they turn, to activate the different functions of the machine such as moving the needle, going back or drawing zigzag. When the machine is sewing, the set of disks rotates and the rest of the buttons and levers activate themselves. This is very crazy to see, needless to say is that at first I sewed very slowly because the needle moved a lot to all sides and I was afraid it would break 😂.
Lo que hacen los discos es accionar unas pequeñas palancas a medida que van girando, para activar las distintas funciones de la máquina como mover la aguja, retroceder o dibujar zigzag. Cuando la máquina está cosiendo, el connjunto de discos gira y el resto de los botones y palancas se activan solos. Esto es muy loco de ver, demás decir es que al principio cosía super despacio porque la aguja se movía mucho para todos lados y tenía miedo de que se me rompiera 😂.
I spent a good while playing with some of the combinations that the manual showed: in it there are some tables that indicate the numbers of discs to use, the length of the stitch and the position of the needle. I must say that some combinations did not give exactly the drawing that the manual showed but at least it sewed well, so it is enough for me to use in some future project ❤️.
Estuve un buen rato jugando con algunas de las combinaciones que mostraba el manual: en él hay unas tablas que te indican los números de discos a usar, la longitud de la puntada y la posición de la aguja. Debo decir que algunas combinaciones no daban exactamente el dibujo que mostraba el manual pero al menos cosía bien, así que me es suficiente para usar en algún proyecto futuro ❤️.
Along with this, I must continue to investigate other issues such as thread tension and fabric drag, since as it is necessary for the stitch to flow correctly, nothing should be too tight or too loose. But at the moment I am proud of my little machine and all that it can achieve. I'm sure that together we will continue to do a lot of beautiful things 😅.
Junto con esto debo seguir investigando otras cuestiones como tensión de los hilos y arrastre de la tela, ya que como es necesario que la puntada fluya correctamente, nada debe estar muy tirante o muy flojo. Pero por el momento estoy orgullosa de mi maquinita y de todo lo que puede lograr. Estoy segura de que juntas vamos a seguir haciendo un montón de cosas hermosas 😅.
Now we are on the date that our WIP challenge is about to end. You still have time until Wednesday the 31st, so don't despair of finishing everything, but don't relax too much either. I think that together we did a great job completing all our abandoned projects: for my part, thanks to this initiative I was able to sew a skirt, a cushion, a multipurpose bag and seven new outfits for my doll. Ahora sí estamos en la fecha en la que nuestro desafío WIP está a punto de terminar. Aún tienen tiempo hasta el miércoles 31, así que no se desesperen por terminar todo pero tampoco se relajen tanto. Creo que entre todos hicimos un gran trabajo completando todos nuestros proyectos abandonados: por mi parte, gracias a esta iniciativa pude coser una pollera, un almohadón, una bolsa multiusos y siete outfits nuevos para mi muñeca. Me encanta ser productiva y me gustó mucho participar en esto. Felicitaciones a todos los que se unieron a esto y gracias por ser parte de Needle Work Monday ❤️.
