Hello everyone! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town, South Africa and this is a Warhammer 40k - The Great Unit Review Wheel! post!
Now known as the Unit Review Library! Here is the current Library Link post!
What is it all about? It is not there to just give a stat. It is there to give MY review of the unit!
Space Wolves incoming!
As explained in This post about new reveals at Adepticon the Space Wolves are suddenly being launched and dropped on our heads suddenly!
Thus my time for reviewing their Datasheets is running out. I have 34 Reviews to do, I am trying to maintain a fast pace so I will give myself 17 days including today to complete all of these. That means that the last day of this personal challenge will be the 15th of April 2025!
Today is Day 16/17.
I have reviewed 34/34.
Time elapsed: 94.11%
Review Completion: 100%
Two ahead and Challenge completed!
Beyond them looms another 85 reviews of the Coming soon section! I better get cracking!
Hobby Fund - Working myself into the clear
With my hobby posts, I generate a hobby fund. 50% of the income goes into the fund. At the moment I put all my HBD earned from Warhammer posts into my alt account @zakl.hobbyfund.
I am collecting funds in the following ways:
- Blogging about Warhammer to earn HBD
- Accepting donations - Can be sent directly to @zakl.hobbyfund in HBD
- Selling some of the collection to friends.
At the current count I am paying off some hobby debts. I still have $242 to pay off!
Every bit counts!
Back to the review.
Army Rule Recap
Like all Space Marines, Space Wolves get Oath of Moment, the ability to target a priority unit and get re-rolls to Hit against that unit until the next turn!
Detachment Rule - The Great Wolf Watches
At the end of your opponent's Charge Phase, Astartes Infantry and Walker units within 3" of and enemy unit can declare a charge as though it were your Charge phase. If the Charge is successful, that unit does not get any charge bonuses.
Terminator units not Battleshocked get +1 OC.
Thoughts
This is an army-wide free Heroic Intervention! This means units can walk in batches and support one another from combats.
Extra OC for Termintors can only mean that the designers have built this Detachment around Terminators!
Enhancements
Every Detachment has their own Enhancements to put on Characters. You cannot put 2 Enhancements on 1 hero, Epic Heros cannot take theim either and you are limited to 3 of the 4.
Here are the Enhancements for the Champions of Fenris:
Wolves' Wisdom - 30pts
Increases the Great Wolf Watches rule to a 6" range instead of the 3".
I would say that the best unit to put this onto would be an Infantry unit that would be really scary in Close combat. 10-man units of Wolf Guard Terminators is probably the answer!
Foes' Fate - 15pts
Astartes Terminator units only.
When the enemy tries to run away from this model, they must take Desperate Escape Tests. That means roll a Dice for each model and on a 1 and 2, those models die.
I that unit is Battle-shocked, then subtract 1 from the roll, meaning that 1,2,3 is a fail!
This is quite nasty!
Fangrune Pendant - 15pts
Terminator models only.
This unit can Fall Back and Shoot and Charge!
So simple and so deadly! This keeps them on top of the units that they really need to kill!
Longstrider - 20pts
This model's unit can re-roll the Charge roll.
Stratagems
Stratagems are used in the battle as an elective rule that can be employed in crucial moments. All armies have access to Universal Stratagems but each Detachment has their very own Stratagems that they can use.
This is what the Champions of Fenris can do.
Armour of Contempt - 1CP
Can be used in the Shooting Phase or Fight Phase after an enemy unit has selected their target. That attack's AP is reduced by 1 for that attack.
This used to be for all attacks against that unit for the whole phase, now it is just for one attack.
Preytanker's Eye - 1CP
Used in the Shooting OR Fight phase.
That unit gains either Lethal Hits or Sustained Hits 1 until the end of the Phase.
Simple and yet super effective at boosting appropriate rules for the target, whatever that may be.
Runes of Claiming - 1CP
Used at the end of the Command Phase on an Infantry unit or a Walker unit within range of an object that you own.
You make that objective Sticky.
This is great as your elite army can now move forward and attack and pursue!
Chilling Howl - 1CP
Used in you opponent's Command Phase on a Terminator unit in your army. All enemy units within 6" of the Terminator unit must make a Battle-shock test. Units Below Half must subtract 1 from the roll.
Great for making your opponent lose control of an objective!
Stalking Wolves - 1CP
Used in your opponent's Shooting Phase on an Astartes Infanry unit. This unit has the Stealth rule.
Stealth means -1 to Hit.
A decent Defensive boost.
Onrushing Storm - 1CP
Used at the end of the opponent's Fight Phase. If a Terminator unit is not within engagement with enemy units, this unit can be put into Reserves.
This is a great tactical ability. It means that you can find that a unit gets stranded on one side of the board with nothing to do. Now you can re-deploy them and bring them into a place where there will be proper fight!
Conclusion
I think that this Detachment offers very interesting and strong abilities. However, I would need to build a Terminator/Dreadnought/Infantry army to make that work!
Well, the Challenge has been completed! Time to update the Links post and then build my new list of reviews!
Thank you for reading this post!
