Discovering Abilities XXV: Piercing

The 25th edition of the Discovering Abilities series is here. Long gone is the first edition in which we looked at the Cripple skill. This week we'll be looking at an ability that shines in the fire deck, but is also useful in other decks. In this case we look at Piercing and we do it with a neutral card that we insert into the water deck. It's Goblin Mech's turn to show off his tanking ability. Let's get started.

Llega la edición número 25 de la serie Discovering Abilities. Lejos queda ya aquella primera edición en la que analizábamos la habilidad Cripple. Para esta semana vamos a analizar una habilidad que brilla en el mazo de fuego aunque también es útil con otro tipo de mazos. En este caso analizamos Piercing y lo hacemos con una carta neutral que insertamos en el mazo de agua. Turno para que Goblin Mech nos muestre su capacidad de tanque. Comenzamos.

The reason Piercing shines especially bright with the fire mallet is explained by the playability of this ability. As you know, the fire mallet shines with excellent melee power. Well, what Piercing does is that excess attack damage to a card with a shield is not lost, it goes to damage that card's health meaning that if Goblin Mech, with its four points of damage, attacks a card with two points of shield, it will destroy its shield and also do two points of damage to the health of the target card.

El motivo por el que Piercing brilla especialmente con el mazo de fuego tiene su explicación en la jugabilidad de esta habilidad. Como bien sabes, el mazo de fuego brilla por su excelente poder en el ataque cuerpo a cuerpo. Pues bien, lo que provoca Piercing es que el exceso de ataque al dañar a una carta con escudo no se pierde, se destina a dañar la salud de dicha carta. Es decir, si Goblin Mech, con sus cuatro puntos de daño, ataca una carta con dos puntos de escudo destruirá su escudo y, además, hará dos puntos de daño a la salud de la carta objetivo.

No less than 37 cards have the Piercing ability. Ten of them belong to the Fire Deck, making it the deck with the most cards with this ability. In fact, even a summoner, Qid Yuff, has the Piercing ability in this deck. Six neutral cards also contribute this ability at some point in their evolution.

Nada menos que 37 cartas cuentan con la habilidad Piercing. Diez de ellas pertenecen al mazo de fuego conviertiendo este mazo en el que más cartas con esta habilidad cuenta. Piercing is not a skill that I play on a regular basis. As you may know, I only have evolved water and earth decks. The water deck only has three cards with Piercing and one of them is Gladius. In addition, the other two only add the ability at their 10th and 6th level. So I had to add a neutral card to use as a tank to showcase this ability. The fact that she has 4 hit points and her excess attack when damaging a shield is not lost is an ability that was already valuable in my Magic The Gathering playing days and brings back fond memories in Splinterlands. I might have to use it more often from now on.

No es Piercing una habilidad que juegue de manera habitual. Como bien sabrás, solo tengo evolucionados los mazos de agua y tierra. El mazo de agua solo tiene tres cartas con Piercing y una de ellas es Gladius. Además, las otras dos, solo añaden la habilidad en sus niveles 10 y 6. Así las cosas he tenido que añadir una carta neutral para utilizarla como tanque para mostrar esta habilidad. El que cuente con 4 puntos de ataque y su exceso de ataque al dañar un escudo no se pierda es una habilidad que ya era valiosa en mis tiempos de jugador de Magic The Gathering y que me trae muy buenos recuerdos en Splinterlands. Quizá tenga que usarla más a menudo a partir de ahora.

I'm facing @rakeshanae and her powerful life deck with Mother Khala in the Piercing skill example battle. With such a deck, it's very likely that he'll form up with Shielbearer as a summoner, so a strategy with Goblin Mech and its powerful attack followed by the usual magic attack cards from the water deck can take out this powerful tank in the first round of play. Me enfrento a @rakeshanae y su potente mazo de vida con Mother Khala en la batalla de ejemplo de la habilidad Piercing. Con ese mazo es muy probable que forme con Shielbearer como invocador. Por ello, una estrategia con Goblin Mech y su poderoso ataque seguido de las habituales cartas con ataque mágico del mazo de agua puede liquidar a este poderoso tanque en la primera ronda de juego. As expected, Shielbearer was the summoner of choice for my opponent. Así las cosas mi estrategia ha funcionado a la perfección ya que era el escenario que había previsto y en función a ello elegí mi formación. Goblin Mech showed his weakness against magic attacks, but thanks to the presence of River Hellondale he had a second chance to show his skills. Affordable victory in the Silver I league, which is where I'm going to finish this season that is about to end.

Como era de esperar, Shielbearer ha sido el invocador elegido por mi rival. Así las cosas mi estrategia ha funcionado a la perfección ya que era el escenario que había previsto y en función a ello elegí mi formación. Goblin Mech ha mostrado su debilidad ante ataques mágicos aunque gracias a la presencia de River Hellondale ha tenido una segunda oportunidad para mostrar sus habilidades. Victoria asequible en la liga Plata I que es en la que voy a terminar esta temporada que está a punto de poner su punto y final.

Piercing is an interesting but less powerful skill than it might seem. It's worth noting that we have one summoner who provides it and we hardly ever encounter it on the battlefield. Which is already an indicator that there are abilities that are much more valued by players. Its basic gameplay is with cards with a lot of power, both melee and ranged, such as Goblin Mech. The problem is that cards with a lot of attack power also tend to have a high summoning cost, limiting the formation of our lineups. All in all, this week's ability, Piercing, gets a score of 5 out of 10 in this 25th analysis.

Piercing es una habilidad interesante aunque menos poderosa de lo que pudiera parecer. Hay que tener en cuenta que tenemos un invocador que la aporta y apenas nos lo encontramos en el campo de batalla. De hecho es uno de los invocadores con el precio más bajo en el mercado. Lo cual ya es un indicador de que hay habilidades mucho más valoradas por los jugadores. Su jugabilidad básica es con cartas con mucho poder tanto de ataque cuerpo a cuerpo como a distancia como es el caso de Goblin Mech. El problema es que las cartas con mucho ataque suelen tener también mucho coste de invocación limitando mucho la formación de nuestras alineaciones. En resumen, la habilidad de esta semana, Piercing, se lleva una nota de 5 sobre 10 en esta análisis número 25.
